Owen Ashworth started to make music on a small casio keyboard back in 1997. His first two albums, "Answering Machine Music" and "Pocket Symphonies for Lonely Subway Cars," were made using nothing but small, battery-operated keyboards and Ashworth's own voice (along with occasional accompaniment by guest musicians). These early albums are now available on one CD, appropriately titled "The First Two Albums by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone."
Ashworth has released numerous EPs and full-length albums, with a trademark austere lyrical style that conveys emotions through its simplicity and directness.
CFTPA expanded its sound in 2006 with Ashworth's release 'Etiquette,' now using more instruments and effects (as well as more professional production and vocals from Jenny Herbinson). This album has given Ashworth room for experimentation and thinking space.
In 2009, CFTPA's newest album, titled 'Vs. Children,' was released. Although vocally very similar to his earlier work, the album features a greater variety of acoustic instruments and further demonstrates Ashworth's interest in pursuing more complex arrangements for his songs. His live shows reflect this as on his most recent tour he is joined by a full band.
In 2010 Ashworth announced that he was retiring the "Casiotone for the Painfully Alone" name, as well as the songs he wrote under that name. He now performs as Advance Base and a producer.

With every intention of dancing till dawn
But when the DJ played that song, it all went wrong
Crying in the cabride home
With frank sinatra on the radio
But it might as well have been lil kim
When every song you hear still reminds you of him
But it's the shake in your voice
That gives it away, how you feel
And you couldn't slam the door any faster
And you'll say that it's no big deal
But it's the tears on your face
That give away how you feel
And you'll say tonight
Tonight was a disaster
The lyrics to Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's song "Tonight Was A Disaster" capture the feeling of heartbreak and disappointment after a night of trying to move on. The singer describes how they put on their best clothes and went out with the intention of having a good time dancing until sunrise, but their plans went awry when the DJ played a song that reminded them of their past love. The singer ends up crying in the cab ride home, listening to Frank Sinatra on the radio, but the music doesn't bring any comfort. The lyrics highlight the power of music to evoke memories and emotions, and how difficult it can be to move on from a painful breakup.
The singer tries to downplay their emotions, saying that it's "no big deal," but their shaky voice and tears give away how much they are hurting. The chorus repeats twice, emphasizing the point that the night was a disaster. The lyrics capture the sense of feeling lost, directionless, and overwhelmed after a failed attempt to move on. Overall, "Tonight Was A Disaster" is a poignant and emotional depiction of heartbreak and the power of music to heighten our emotions.
