Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

Children Of The Night
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Within their dreams, I walk the shadows
Late at night an empty feeling creeps
Within my soul, I feel so lonely
So I go into the darkness of the night
All alone I walk the streets until I find
Someone who is just like me
Children of the night
Late at night a restless feeling takes
Control of me and I can't fight it
Late at night I feel the need for someone
Who like me needs understanding
So once again I'll search the darkness of the night
All alone I'll walk each street until I find
Someone who is just like me
Looking for some company, no, yeah, hea
Children of the night
So once again I'll search the darkness of the night
All alone I'll walk each street until I find
Someone who is just like me
Looking for some company, no, yeah, hea
Children of the night
Children of the night
Children of the night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
The song "Children Of The Night" by Cassandra Wilson is about the feeling of loneliness and the search for companionship. The singer in the song walks alone in the shadows, feeling empty and restless late at night. They are looking for someone like them, who understands their feelings and needs some company. The lyrics suggest that there are other people like them, children of the night, who are also searching for companionship and understanding.
The repetition of the phrase "children of the night" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's feeling of belonging to a specific group of people who share the same experiences and emotions. The chorus also highlights the idea that this searching for companionship is an ongoing process that the singer must repeat every night.
The song is powerful in its simplicity; a slow and emotional melody combined with raw and honest lyrics. It is an anthem for those who are looking for connection and understanding, and a reminder that they are not alone in their search.
