Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

Days of Wine and Roses
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Through the meadow land toward a closing door
A door marked "nevermore" that wasn't there before
The lone-ly night discloses just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you
The lonely, the night discloses just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you
In Cassandra Wilson's song Days of Wine and Roses, the lyrics metaphorically describe the fleeting nature of happiness and how it can quickly disappear. The title itself alludes to the phrase "the good life" and the optimism that comes with it. The opening line, "The days of wine and roses laugh and run away like a child at play," suggests that happiness slips away uncontrollably, much like a child playing and disappearing. The second line, "Through the meadow land toward a closing door," implies that something is coming to an end.
The third line of the verse, "A door marked 'nevermore' that wasn't there before," suggests that what was once pure and happy has now come to an end, and there is no going back to it. It is a door that symbolizes the loss of what could have been. The second verse is about the memories that linger when happiness has vanished. The "passing breeze" brings back the old memories of "the golden smile that introduced me to the days of wine and roses and you." It highlights how memories can often lead to a sense of yearning and sorrow for what is gone and cannot be relived.
