Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

Domination Switch
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They won't give me a solution
To the many problems of the poor and homeless
Dying babies, people acting crazy
you build your world 9 miles high
Think you gonna touch the sky
You might think you see the face of god in all its glory
kind and gentle, what is that?
While some are starving you get fat
You might think "a thousand points of light" will save this shituation
No, domination switch is on
you build your world nine miles high
Think you gonna thouch the sky
You might see the face of god in all its clouds of glory
But the story is not ended
domination switch
Domination switch
Domination switch
Domination switch is on
kind and gentle...
The lyrics of Cassandra Wilson’s song, “Domination Switch,” convey a sense of frustration and disillusionment with modern society’s institutions and their failure to provide solutions to pressing issues such as poverty, homelessness, and mental illness. The singer rejects these institutions and questions the notion of “kind and gentle” behavior in a world where some are starving while others grow fat. The lyrics suggest that some people in power believe that a “thousand points of light” will save the situation, but the domination switch is on, indicating that the problems are deep-rooted and cannot be easily solved.
The repeated motif of building the world “nine miles high” and expecting to touch the sky suggests that there is a hubris within those in power who believe they can control everything but ultimately fall short of their grand plans. The use of the phrase “face of god in all its glory” suggests that some people believe they have an almost divine ability to shape the world as they see fit, yet the singer disagrees. The repetition of the phrase “domination switch” underscores the seriousness and urgency of the problems and suggests that a radical change is required to address them.
