Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

Traveling Miles
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
【前奏】
Some day my prince will come
Some day I'll find my love
And how thrilling a moment it will be
When the prince of my dreams comes for me
He'll whisper "I love you"
And steal a kiss or two...
Though he's far away
I'll find my love some day
When my dreams come true
【間奏】
Some day I'll find my love
Someone to call my own
And I'll know him the moment that we meet
For my heart will start skipping a beat
Some day we'll say and do
Things we've been longing to
Though he's far away
I'll find my love some day
When my dreams come true.
【尾奏】
The lyrics to Cassandra Wilson's song "Traveling Miles" are a reflection on the life and legacy of jazz legend Miles Davis. Like "Some Day My Prince Will Come," which was written for the 1937 Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the song is full of yearning and hope for a better future. Wilson's voice is haunting and soulful, perfectly capturing the emotions of the lyrics.
The first verse sets the tone for the song, with Wilson singing about how Miles Davis was always searching for something more, always looking to push the boundaries of jazz and find new ways to express himself. The second verse is more personal, with Wilson reflecting on her own journey as a musician and the importance of following your dreams and staying true to yourself.
The chorus of the song returns to the theme of hope and possibility, with Wilson singing about how Miles Davis is still traveling, still searching for new sounds and new experiences. The final verse is a tribute to Davis's legacy, with Wilson acknowledging the impact he had on the world of music and the inspiration he continues to provide to musicians today.
Overall, "Traveling Miles" is a powerful tribute to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, capturing both the passion and the complexity of his life and work.
