Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

You Move Me
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So precious and rare
The thought
Of you kissing me there
You know my secrets
You know the curve and the line
One touch
Rain falls down on me
I can hardly see
For the water in my eyes
Love comes down on me
And I can hardly breathe
For the trembling in my thighs
You move me
Rememberin' moments
So precious and rare
The thought, mm
Of you kissing me there, mm
You know my secrets
You know the curve and the line
One touch, mm, and I know you are mine
Rain falls down on me
I can hardly see
For the water in my eyes
Love comes down on me
I can hardly breathe
Oh, the trembling in my thighs
You move me
In "You Move Me," Cassandra Wilson sings about the intense feelings that someone can experience when they are in love. The lyrics describe the power of physical touch and the effect it can have on a person. The lines "You know my secrets / You know the curve and the line" suggest that the singer's lover knows her intimately and understands every part of her. The phrase "One touch / And I know you are mine" emphasizes the power of touch to spark a deep emotional connection.
The chorus of the song reinforces the visceral nature of love, with the repeated line "You move me." The singer describes being overwhelmed with emotion and struggling to breathe due to the intensity of her feelings. Even the rain falling becomes a metaphor for the way that love can blind and confuse someone.
The song's lyrics paint a vivid picture of passionate love that can be felt on a physical and emotional level. Cassandra Wilson's vocals are haunting and emotional, adding to the rawness of the song's message.

This was my introduction to the magic that is Cassandra Wilson. Absolutely shifted my world as she taught me to appreciate my own unusually deep voice and I've been a huge fan of hers ever since.... Also, the Love Jones soundtrack is one of the best compilation albums ever as far as I'm concerned.

Transformative kisses will never be repeated, revisited or recaptured. Hold on to the love you have. Recognition of those vibrations become faint, faded and unsyncopated as time passes. EMBRACE BEING MOVED!
