Opportunity
Catch 22 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hardships faced. We've been disgraced.
Our plans for the land are degraded by menacing hands.
But history's compelling us, telling us to do it all again.
As far as I can see, everything that we had believed
is more true now than ever before.
If the truth be known, we would do it all again.

We got low, down in Mexico.
It seems so far after having been so close.
We got low, down in Mexico.
We lost everything except the things that matter most.

Bureaucracy and hypocrisy are contagious and make us all victims eventually.
You can take my life from me, but we will do it all again.
The seeds of truth will grow.
The people will know of the visions that we have endeavored to show.
And like the river we will flow.
We Will do it all again.

Faceless men who represent no idea or purpose intend
to prevent revolution though revolution,
but we could do it all again.
Even when I die, I hope you won't cry,

for my life has been happily spent in the struggle...
and I love you so I would do it all again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Opportunity" by Catch 22 are a commentary on the struggles and hardships faced by those who fight for change and revolution. The song expresses the frustration of those who have had their plans thwarted by bureaucrats and hypocrites, but also the determination to keep going in spite of the setbacks. The repeated refrain of "We Will do it all again" is a statement of defiance and hope, even in the face of oppression and adversity.

The first verse speaks to the feeling of being degraded by forces outside of our control. Despite these menacing hands, history is compelling us to keep fighting for the change we believe in. The second verse describes a period of struggle in Mexico, where all material possessions were lost but the things that mattered most - the pursuit of truth and justice - remained. The third verse expresses a frustration with how bureaucracy and hypocrisy can make even well-intentioned people into victims, but reiterates the commitment to keep going no matter what. The final verse is a touching message of love and hope for the future, even beyond the life of the singer.

Ah, you obviously do not know the context. This song is taken from a concept album about a historical figure called Trotsky. This particular song deals with him in 1940. Hope this simple explanation helped!
