The Suffering
Catch 22 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Awaken on the otherside
Where twilight descends
Wicked from the womb we rise
From underneath the skin
Answering the calling
To face our fate at hand
The forming of pure evil
Created by man
Betrayal of the masses
Leaves blood upon the bricks

Damaged lost and suffering
Into the black we slip

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Catch 22's The Suffering depict a haunting and bleak world where humanity is consumed by darkness and despair. The opening lines "Awaken on the otherside / Where twilight descends" set the tone for the song, suggesting a place of limbo between life and death. The line "Wicked from the womb we rise / From underneath the skin" implies that the very essence of humanity is corrupt, and that we are doomed to suffer from our own inherent flaws.

The second verse continues this theme, describing the formation of "pure evil" that was "created by man." This speaks to the idea that humanity is capable of creating its own destruction, whether it be through war, environmental degradation, or any number of other ways. The chorus speaks to the idea of suffering and betrayal, and the sense that we are all somehow implicated in it. The final line, "Into the black we slip," suggests a fatalistic acceptance of our fate, that we are powerless to escape the suffering that we have brought upon ourselves.

Overall, the lyrics to The Suffering are a bleak and powerful indictment of the darkness that lies within human nature. They suggest that we are doomed to suffer from our own flaws and that the only way to avoid this fate is to confront our own demons and try to find a way to rise above them.

What I liked about the story involving Torque is it never tries to tell you what to think of him. You get the equivalent of a page 4 newspaper article on what happened to his family, the opinions of some of the characters who also read that article and have to decide for yourself what kind of man (or monster) Torque really is. Kind of refreshing to be honest.

Totally agree. It let's you form your own opinion, and that's not a trick used often in games.
