Daylight Matters
Cate le Bon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wide of the line in occasional bloom
Silhouette of the night
Still never not there
And I'm never gonna be there again
Promises speaking confusion and dice
A day in the life
Arranging the chairs
And I'm never gonna live it again

Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
But you're not here
Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
But you've gone

Why do they stick when your lips read like stone?
Mouthing the lines, returning the air
And I'm never gonna feel them again

Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
But you're not here
Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
But you've gone

If I'm never gonna see it again
It's too late now
Your mind is like
Dreams I've had and never shared
Sacrificed the daylight matters
Ooh, la ah

Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on

Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
But you're not here

Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
But you've gone

Overall Meaning

The song "Daylight Matters" by Cate le Bon has a melancholic tone and laments a lost love. The opening lines "wide of the line in occasional bloom, silhouette of the night, still never not there" suggest that the singer is caught in a perpetual state of limbo, unable to move forward from the loss of their loved one. The subsequent lines "and I'm never gonna be there again, promises speaking confusion and dice, a day in the life" highlight the confusion and ambiguity of the situation. The singer seems to be reminiscing about the good times but also accepts that they will never experience them again.

The refrain "Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, but you're not here, love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, but you've gone" reinforces the sense of loss and longing. The lines "why do they stick when your lips read like stone, mouthing the lines, returning the air, and I'm never gonna feel them again" suggest that the singer is unable to forget the memories of their past relationship, even though they know that it is over.

The song seems to end on a slightly hopeful note with the lines "if I'm never gonna see it again, it's too late now, your mind is like, dreams I've had and never shared, sacrificed the daylight matters." The phrase "sacrificed the daylight matters" suggests that the singer realizes that they have wasted too much time on this lost love and have to move on. The upbeat refrain of "come on" towards the end of the song also signals a desire to move forward.

Maybe you can live through the loss of love
after one more than enough trips down the hole.
The words are sad but the tone is positive.
Wow.

Wow! The imagery in this video with the juxtaposition of open, natural spaces and industrial structures made me wistful for the way my hometown used to be, with vast swaths of trees and wooded areas that have subsequently been razed to make way for more retail shops, restaurants, and a road that I used to ride my bicycle on in the 1980s when that road was under construction (before automobiles were allowed on it). Beautiful vocals, too -- what a unique timbre in that voice.

Qué temazo!

What an original song of love. What an unicity as far as the sound is cocerned.
