In 1952 she married juggler Erik van Aro (Gerd Eric Horst Scholz). He recognized her talent and accompanied her in her initial years of worldwide success, although they later divorced. In 1953, she made her first recordings with Kurt Edelhagen. Soon afterwards she achieved great success with songs like "Malagueña", "The Breeze and I", and "Dreh dich nicht um" with the Werner Müller orchestra. In 1955 she was featured on the "Colgate Comedy Hour" with Gordon MacRae. Between 1966 and 1972 she was a frequent guest on the Dean Martin Show. In 1972, she married the British pianist Roy Budd; they had a son, Alexander, but they divorced in 1979.
In Germany she was a major performer of Schlager music. There she recorded Cole Porter's "I love Paris" i.e. "Ganz Paris träumt von der Liebe", which sold more than 500,000 copies in (1954.) Like in other countries where she was popular, some in Germany mistakenly consider her a German singer.
Over the years, she has recorded or performed with many international stars, including Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Sy Oliver, Claus Ogerman, and Chet Baker.
In 2001, she released a new album Girltalk with harpist Catherine Michel. She is also the mother of singer Eric van Aro, Jr.
Casanova
Caterina Valente Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Casanova kiss kiss, Casanova kiss kiss, Casanova kiss me!
Sind auch andere Frauen heut' noch dein,
Irgendwann liebst du mich allein -
May other women be yours today,
Some time you'll only love me
Casanova bac-bac, Casanova bac-bac-bac-bacciame!
Laß mich ein bißchen träumen,
Komm, laß' uns nicht versäumen,
Was mich glücklich macht heut' nacht!
Take me in your arms,
Let me dream a little,
Come, don't let us miss,
What's making me happy tonight!
Casanova bac-bac, Casanova bac-bac, Casanova bacciame!
Casanova kiss kiss, Casanova kiss kiss, Casanova kiss me!
The lyrics to Caterina Valente's song Casanova express the desire for the charming and seductive Casanova to kiss the singer. Despite his reputation for loving many women, the singer believes that eventually, he will only love her. The repetition of "Casanova bac-bac" and "Casanova bacciame" emphasizes the desire for his affection and touch.
The singer asks to be taken in his arms and to be allowed to dream for a little while. She wants to fully enjoy the happiness that he can bring her tonight. The lyrics suggest that the singer is fully aware of Casanova's reputation with other women, but is still hopeful that he will choose to love only her in the end.
Overall, the lyrics to Casanova express a desire for love and affection, even when those feelings may not be reciprocated or may be shared with others. The repetition of the title character's name and the request for kisses give the song a playful and flirtatious tone, while the hope for an eventual exclusive love provides a deeper emotional layer.
