Istanbul
Caterina Valente Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So, take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Istanbul

Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

So, take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Istanbul

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Caterina Valente's song Istanbul are an ode to the former capital city of Turkey once named Constantinople. The song begins with the recognition of the name change, as Constantinople is now referred to solely as Istanbul. The singer mentions how long it has been since the name change occurred and reminisces about the past. The phrase "Turkish delight on a moonlit night" suggests the exotic beauty of Istanbul during the night.

The song goes on to claim that every woman in Constantinople now lives in Istanbul. If one has a date in Constantinople, she would be waiting in Istanbul, emphasizing the importance of the city's name change. The song also draws a comparison between the name change of Constantinople to Istanbul and the name change of New York from New Amsterdam. It suggests the reason for the name changes is societal preference, as people liked it better that way.

The song concludes with the plea to take the singer back to Constantinople, which too is now not possible. It leaves with a question about why Constantinople got the works, which is the idiom for getting the short end of the stick, and the answer to which is left as a mystery. Overall, the song presents a nostalgic yearning for Constantinople as it acknowledges the city's rich history and vibrant culture.

Gheorghe Apetroae, Sibiu
