In 1952 she married juggler Erik van Aro (Gerd Eric Horst Scholz). He recognized her talent and accompanied her in her initial years of worldwide success, although they later divorced. In 1953, she made her first recordings with Kurt Edelhagen. Soon afterwards she achieved great success with songs like "Malagueña", "The Breeze and I", and "Dreh dich nicht um" with the Werner Müller orchestra. In 1955 she was featured on the "Colgate Comedy Hour" with Gordon MacRae. Between 1966 and 1972 she was a frequent guest on the Dean Martin Show. In 1972, she married the British pianist Roy Budd; they had a son, Alexander, but they divorced in 1979.
In Germany she was a major performer of Schlager music. There she recorded Cole Porter's "I love Paris" i.e. "Ganz Paris träumt von der Liebe", which sold more than 500,000 copies in (1954.) Like in other countries where she was popular, some in Germany mistakenly consider her a German singer.
Over the years, she has recorded or performed with many international stars, including Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Sy Oliver, Claus Ogerman, and Chet Baker.
In 2001, she released a new album Girltalk with harpist Catherine Michel. She is also the mother of singer Eric van Aro, Jr.
Make Someone Happy
Caterina Valente Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a thrill to have the world at your feet
The praise of the crowd, it's exciting
But I've learned that's not what makes a life complete
There's one thing you can do for the rest of your days
That's worth more than applause
The screaming crowd, the bouquets
Make someone happy
Make just one someone happy
Make just one heart the heart you sing to
One smile that cheers you
One face that lights when it nears you
One man you're everything to
Fame if you win it
Comes and goes in a minute
Where's the real stuff in life to cling to
Love is the answer
Someone to love is the answer
Once you've found him, build your world around him
Make someone happy
Make just one someone happy
And you will be happy, too
The opening lines of Caterina Valente's song, "Make Someone Happy" seem to be celebrating the power of mass applause and worldwide recognition. However, the lyrics then take a turn as Valente reveals her realization that these things do not provide true fulfillment or happiness. Instead, she suggests that there is a more meaningful way to spend our days - by making someone else happy.
Valente explains that dedicating oneself to making someone else happy is a pursuit that is ultimately more valuable than the fleeting fame and adulation that come from success. She argues that love is the ultimate answer to finding happiness and fulfillment in life, and that once someone has found that someone special, they should build their world around them. Valente's message is a simple yet profound reminder that happiness can be found in lifting others up and knowing that you have made someone else's day a little brighter.
In conclusion, Valente's lyrics in "Make Someone Happy" serve as an uplifting call to action for listeners to think beyond their own personal success and recognition, and instead prioritize the happiness of others. By doing so, she argues, we can build a life that is not only fulfilling but also deeply meaningful.
