Outside
Catfish and The Bottlemen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We let them knock like crazy 'cause I'd not seen her in months
She knew how to save me for the craic though, carried on
I know I've pushed boundaries sometimes but she knows she's worse I've missed this, I was bound to

I just came along for the ride
And I tried my best to keep away from you
But you've just stepped off of a flight
And now you beg for my company
'Cause y'know I'll give it you all

Tell your sister to wait

'Cause there's no-one in the life I knew that got through to me
But when you talk about nothing, you tend to lose me
'Cause there's nothing in the life I knew that got through to me
But when you scream about nothing, that's when you lose me
I used to carry you through town
You used to smother me in lippy
Now if we ever get an hour together it's like I'm on the outside

We let them talk behind us 'cause I'd not seen her in months
They know how to find us for the craic though, carry on
I know I've pushed boundaries at times but she's just as bad
I've missed this, I was bound to

I just came along for the ride
And I tried my best to keep away from you

Tell your sister to wait

Overall Meaning

In "Outside" by Catfish and The Bottlemen, the singer is meeting up with an old flame after a long time apart. Despite the knocks at the door, he waits until the last minute before letting his ex-lover into his life again. He knows that she has a way of saving him, but their relationship is troubled, filled with missed opportunities and misunderstandings. The singer has pushed boundaries, but feels that his ex-lover is just as culpable. He reminisces about their past love, but also acknowledges that they have both changed.

The chorus of the song alludes to the fact that the singer feels like an outsider in his own life and in his relationship with his ex-lover. He had tried to keep away from her, but now that she has returned, he feels obligated to give her his time and attention. He acknowledges that their communication has been problematic in the past, with both of them having a tendency to lose each other when talking about nothing or screaming about nothing.

Overall, "Outside" explores the complicated emotions that arise when two people who have a shared past attempt to reconnect after a long absence. Although the singer misses his ex-lover and is willing to spend time with her when she returns, he also feels like an outsider in their relationship and questions whether they can ever truly understand each other.

There's something addictive about The Bottlemen's music. I remember when Kathleen came out and I listened to it constantly on a loop for months.

This song is having the same effect on me.

All of their songs are so depressingly uplifting. It's odd but incredible simultaneously.
