Paraffin
Catfish and The Bottlemen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We come, system
Nothing but you
Take it, it yours
But don't expect me around when you do

We've got to get out, we've got to leave
We've got to get out, we've got to leave
We've got to get out, we've got to leave
I feel the [?]

We come, system
Nothing but you
We gotta get to Parraffin
Just to find you

We've got to get out, we've got to leave
We've got to get out, we've got to leave
We've got to get out, we've got to leave

I feel the [?]
Escape me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Catfish and The Bottlemen's song "Paraffin" talk about the desire to escape. The use of the term "system" is ambiguous and could refer to societal systems or the music industry, which is known for its ruthless and systemic approach to creating and promoting artists. The singer suggests that they are nothing without the system and that they will give the system everything they have, but that they will not be there when the system takes control.

The chorus repeats the phrase "We've got to get out, we've got to leave" which indicates a longing to escape the confines of the system. The singer feels trapped in it, signified by the repetition of "I feel the [?]" The lyrics then suggest that the only way to escape is to find "Paraffin" which is likely metaphorical and represents a place of freedom, a place where they can be themselves and escape the constraints of the system.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of frustration with institutional systems and the desire for personal freedom.

Let me see you get yourself
Out of this situation
Go ahead, accommodate me

She said "I've missed this mattress
And I've missed being classless
And this district's lifeless"

I see potential in you
Cause I see potential in you

And I was only messing
When I used to joke about
Letting you down
Yes I'll let you know
Once I've overdone it

Sweetheart I was dreading
I was only dreading
Meeting your brother
Cause I know how
He can get sometimes

Cause I see potential in you

So call me in the morning
When you've mixed up all your medicine
I'll make you feel a little better

Show me in the evening
Until you disembark
And have a sudden change of heart

Cause I see potential in you
I see potential in you

Call me in the morning when
You've mixed up all your medicine
I see potential in you
