Emily
Catfish and the Bottlemen/Musicfire.in Lyrics

New York, surprise me
Twenty-one and I need something
To pick me up out of
The company I run with
Emily just phoned for me to smoke with her
And on her furniture
Discuss how love has been
I must admit I think I lost my way a bit
'Cause six days in, I swear I lost my baby
But then I wrote two tunes that

Dragged me out from nowhere
Paid for all my cigarettes
And whatever I took to keep you off my mind

New York, surprise me
Twenty-two and I need something
To keep me inside of
This company I run with
Emily just phoned for me to smoke with her
And on her furniture
Discuss how love has been

I must admit I've been known to lose my way a bit

And six days in is where I lost my patience
But then I wrote two tunes that

Overall Meaning

brought me back from loneliness and desperation. In "Emily", Catfish and the Bottlemen sing about a young man who finds himself in New York City, feeling lost and in need of something to lift him out of the rut he's in. He reminisces about the company he keeps and how it's not enough to keep him content. Emily, a woman he knows, calls him up and invites him to join her to smoke and talk about love. It's a small gesture, but one that gives him something to look forward to.

As the song progresses, we learn that the singer has been struggling with a recent breakup, but he finds solace in music. He wrote two songs that help him move on from his past relationship and find inspiration and purpose in his life again. The lyrics are emotive and raw, with lead singer Van McCann delivering them with just the right amount of intensity and vulnerability.

Overall, "Emily" is a song about finding hope and comfort in unexpected places, even when life feels bleak and overwhelming. It's a reminder that sometimes all it takes is a small act of kindness or a creative outlet to pull ourselves out of our darkest moments.
