Her father, the late Luis Russell, was born in Panama and moved to New Orleans and then New York City, becoming a pioneering pianist/bandleader, and Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, is an outstanding bassist and vocalist and holder of advanced degrees from Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music, who has performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Not surprisingly considering her roots, Catherine Russell is a one of a kind vocalist. She has toured the world, performing and recording with a wide array of trend setting artists, including Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, and Rosanne Cash. Her vocal skills have been utilized consistently by Jay Denes for both his Blue Six and Naked Music NYC projects.
Since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat, on Harmonia Mundi's World Village label, Catherine Russell has been making fans and friends and grabbing listeners by the ear. “She is a fresh and original voice. The most exciting debut album I’ve heard in a long time.” writes New York Sun critic and Sinatra biographer, Will Friedwald, who picked Cat among his top 10 cds of the year. “It’s a delight to hear the real thing in Catherine Russell.”, writes Nat Hentoff in The Wall Street Journal.
Ms. Russell has been a hit on major events like Chicago Blues Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Bern International Jazz Festival, JVC-New York Jazz Festival, Detroit International Jazz Festival, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, Lotus Festival, and at premier venues like The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Sculler's in Boston, The Dakota in Minneapolis, and The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. She has appeared on the nationally syndicated shows Mountain Stage, JazzSet on NPR, Studio 360, and The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS-TV. Reviews and profiles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Living Blues, Blues Review, Downbeat, Goldmine, No Depression, Boston Herald, Newark Star Ledger, JazzTimes, Chicago Sun Times, and many more.
Cat spent weeks on JazzWeek magazine's chart for national airplay, while Back O Town Blues was a top 10 download on I-Tunes Jazz Chart. National Public Radio's top 5 jazz cd's of 2006 included Cat, as chosen by WBGO dj's for NPR's year end "Best Of" List.
Catherine Russell's 2nd album on World Village, Sentimental Streak, hit the streets on February 12, 2008, to universal acclaim, becoming a world-wide favorite of critics and fans alike.

Em'ralds in my bracelets and diamonds in my rings
A Riviera chateau and a lot of other things
And I'm blue, so blue am I
Lots of ready money in seven diff'rent banks
I counted up this morning, it's about a million francs
And I'm blue, so blue, and I know why
I've got Harlem on my mind
I've a longing to be lowdown
And my "parlez-vous" will not ring true
With Harlem on my mind
I've been wined and I've been dined
But I'm heading for a showdown
'Cause I can't go on from night to dawn
With Harlem on my mind
I go to supper with a French Marquis
Each evening after the show
My lips begin to whisper "Mon Cheri"
But my heart keeps singing "Hi-de-ho"
I've become too darn refined
And at night I hate to go down
To the high-falutin' flat that Lady Mendel designed
With Harlem on my mind
Em'ralds in my bracelets, diamonds in my rings
A Riviera chateau and a lot of other things
And I'm blue, so blue am I
Lots of ready money in seven diff'rent banks
I counted up this morning, it was 'bout a million francs
And I'm blue, so blue, and I know why
I've got Harlem on my mind
And I'm longin' to be lowdown
And my "parlez-vous" will not ring true
With Harlem on my mind
I've been dined and I've been wined
But I'm headin' for a showdown
'Cause I can't go on from night to dawn
With Harlem on my mind
I go to supper with a French Marquis
Each evening after the show
My lips begin to whisper "Mon Cheri"
But my heart keeps singin' "Hi-de-ho"
I've become too damned refined
And at night I hate to go down
To that high-falutin' flat that Lady Mendel designed
With Harlem on my mind
I've got Harlem on my mind
And I'm longing to be lowdown
And my "parlez-vous" will not ring true
With Harlem on my mind
I've been dined and I've been wined
But sure as your born I'm headin' for a showdown
'Cause I can't go on from night to dawn
With Harlem on my mind
And when I'm bathing in my marble tub
Each evening after the show
I get to thinkin' 'bout that Cotton Club
And my heart starts chirping "Hi-de-ho"
Help me!
I've been too damned refined
And at night I hate to go down
To that flat with fifty million Frenchmen taggin' behind
With Harlem on my mind

Saw Catherine Russell yesterday at the Charlie Parker Festival....she is brilliant. I am embarrassed to say I have not heard her before. No one like her out there today. She is authentic and should get the attention she deserves.
@hawkrider88
Just sublime and a treasure to those who love good music. Makes me shudder.
@elliesings9508
I noticed her on the Grammy 2017 Jazz nominee list. I, embarrassingly, had never heard of her. She's wonderful!! Love, Love, Love this music and her voice. AND of course all of the pics of the Jazz Greats of all-time.

Catherine Russell is amazing. No affectations, no distractions, just incredible talent and an uncanny ability to add a special touch to everything she sings. This is a beautiful video. I have been buying her CDs ever since hearing her on Radio Deluxe, and look forward to every new release.

Truth!
@jackstraw61
Saw her just the other day in Greenwich. Wow! She is the complete package. Amazing voice, great stage presence, wonderful songbook to choose from, and serious bona fides. She's a superstar.
@murph3001
