Just Another Dream
Cathy Dennis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The stars say you're my best lover
Matched up like sugar for a cake
They say our love could conquer anything
I'd always hide my feelings
Keep them so cool and so contained
This time it's something I just can't retain
'Cause you give me a good vibe don't you know baby
You give me funky love, funky love
Could this be what love's all about baby
Or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream

Your voice it calls me everywhere
It haunts my room most every night
This thing has sure enough got me on the line
No chance for explanation
It seems my heart has led the way
Is this my chance to find mon amour parfait
'Cause you give me a good vibe don't you know baby
You give me funky love, funky love
Could this be what love's all about baby
Or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream

Love can be so misleading
I'd cross the earth both land and sea
When I feel that moment badgering me
Could be it's just illusion
But in feeling something good indeed
Is this where loving starts to mirror my dreams
'Cause you give me a good vibe don't you know baby
You give me funky love, funky love
Could this be what love's all about baby
Or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream

Is this for real or is it just another dream
Is this for real or is it just another dream

Overall Meaning

In Cathy Dennis's song "Just Another Dream," the lyrics describe the singer's doubts and confusion about whether their newfound love is real or just a figment of their imagination. The use of celestial imagery in the first stanza, such as "stars say you're my best lover" and "matched up like sugar for a cake," indicates a sense of destiny and a belief that their love is meant to be. However, the singer has always been guarded with their emotions and is struggling to come to terms with their intense feelings, wondering if it's just another dream. The chorus repeats the question of whether the love is real or not, with the singer finding themselves "haunted" by their lover's presence.

In the second stanza, the singer is further plagued by their feelings, as they cannot explain them despite their propensity for being level-headed. They wonder if this is finally their chance at finding "mon amour parfait," or perfect love. However, the doubts remain, and the singer acknowledges that love can be misleading, which leads them to question whether their feelings are just an illusion. By the end of the song, the singer is still unsure about the reality of their love, but the ongoing refrain of "is this for real or is it just another dream" underscores their desperate need for answers.

the early 90s era (1989-1992) was basically the highest evolution of 80s electronic pop music. It was bizarre how the sound of Cathy Dennis/Black Box/CeCe Peniston suddenly disappeared, and was replaced in 1993 by the much more acoustic & introspective sound that people today generally associate with 90s music. The early 90s are a unique era separate from the rest of that decade.

That's an excellent 👌 observation that brought back some unexpected memories!

Please what are some examples of the "acoustic introspective music" that people associate with 90s music? I'm not sure to which music you're referring. I'm curious, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would fit this description .. thanks

@marinadela1361

So true. I wonder what happened?

@gc3k

'88-'92 is my favorite era of pop music. I've noticed more mixes and playlists from this time period on youtube, so I'm glad it's not just me
