Life Goes On

In a fountain
At attention looking backward in a
Pool of water
Wishes with a blue
Songbird on his shoulder
Who keeps singing over everything
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
I picked up the song and found my picture
In the paper
The reflection in the water shouted
"Are your men still
Trying to salute
People from a time when he was
Everything he's supposed to be?"
Everything means nothing to me
The opening line of the song, "Someone found the future as a statue in a fountain" portrays a vision of a future that is fixed and unchangeable just like a statue, frozen in time yet surrounded by flowing water - which implies that time is passing by. The figure's posture, "at attention looking backward", is indicative of someone who is stuck in their past and cannot move forward. It paints a nostalgic image of a person who is perhaps looking back at their youth and holding onto the memories of a time long gone. The blue songbird on his shoulder represents hopefulness and resilience, despite the fact that the person is trapped in the past.
When Catie Curtis sings "Everything means nothing to me" repeatedly, it symbolizes the futility and emptiness that people feel when they are stuck in the past. The line "I picked up the song and found my picture in the paper" indicates that the singer has found herself in the same situation as the person she was referring to earlier. The reflection of the singer in the water shouts out, reminiscing the past, and asks if the singer's men (perhaps representing former lovers or friends) are still trying to recognize the person who she used to be, despite the fact that she has changed.
Overall, the song "Life Goes On" is a powerful anthem of letting go of the past and moving forward. It implores the listener to embrace the present moment and not hold on to things that they cannot change.
