MEMORY
Cats-The Company Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan
Memory all alone in the moonlight
I was beautiful then
I remember
The time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Every street lamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters at the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning
Daylight I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning
Touch me it's so easy to leave me
All alone with my memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is
Look a new day has begun
The song "Memory" from the musical Cats is sung in the second act of the play by the character Grizabella. Midnight is depicted as being a lonely time on the streets as the night is silent with only the sound of wind and the moon is the only light. This is juxtaposed with the character's isolation as she remembers her past as a beautiful and happy cat. She longs to return to those days and is willing to relive those cherished moments.
The song's lyrics highlight the themes of nostalgia, loss, and redemption. Grizabella's memories are both happy and sad- she’s recalling her past but she can't return to it. Every street corner seems to be pointing towards the inevitability of death and the passage of time. The lyrics are powerful enough to create an emotional connection with the listener as it forces one to ruminate about their past and wrestle with their own experiences of joy and loss.

I agree with u 100#
Astronomical facts
You really feel what Grizabella is feeling when the songs starts. Without Elaine, there would never have been Memory
Joel Brewton
At the risk of sounding incredibly snooty... Without Elaine; we would have gotten Judy Dench singing Memory since she was originally cast in the role, but she dropped out due to an injury she sustained during rehearsal. It's one of the reasons she was cast as Old Deuteronomy in the film.
Astronomical facts
@Joel Brewton I know
Monica Segovia
@Joel Brewton wouldn't compare. Elaine is absolutely perfect
Astronomical facts
@Monica Segovia I agree
A cupcake
I still don’t understand why they cast Judy Dench in the first place. Don’t get me wrong. I do like Judy Dench. But her singing is just ok, not great.
