Marian
Cats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are the roses that I brought you, my love
Where are the poems that I wrote
You cast your eyes down when I watch you, my love
Have I been too long on the road

[Chorus]
I came back to find a stranger in tears
She was once the girl I used to know, for some years
Marian, tell me you still care for me
Marian, remember how good those days used to be

Marian, for don't you believe

What kind of music fills your head now my love
What kind of place became your mind
You tried to find out 'bout your feelings my love
Were you ever thinking of mine

[Chorus]

Marian, for don't you believe

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Marian" by Cats tell the story of a man who has been away from his love for a long time, and upon returning, finds that his love has become distant and unrecognizable. The man asks about the roses and poems he brought her, wondering where they went. He watches her cast her eyes down, feeling like he's been away from home for too long. He sees a stranger in tears, once the girl he used to know, but now unfamiliar after being too long on the road. He desperately asks her if she still cares for him, and if she remembers the good times they used to share.

The chorus repeats the man's plea to Marian, begging her to tell him she still cares for him and to remember the good times of their past. The man is trying to understand what kind of music fills her head now, and what kind of place her mind has become. He wonders if she's ever thought about his feelings while trying to find out about her own. Overall, the song expresses the longing of a man who has been away from his love for too long, desperate to find that their love is still alive and well.

@Arqabass

Same here. Geweldige muziek.

@saadzia489

Simply amazing the vocals with the chorus !! Poetry and the sad emotional passion of the lead puts it into a classical voice singing an irreplaceable lament. Music and songs by the Cats stand out no matter how many years may have passed.

Dit is zo'n goede band. En ik was als 10 jarige kereltje al fan. En door de tijd heen worden ze steeds beter. Leve de jaren 70 en 80. Toen was alles echt mooier en beter...
