Memory
Cats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Midnight not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory all alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember
The time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every street lamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters at the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me it's so easy to leave me
All alone with my memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me

You'll understand what happiness is
Look a new day has begun

Overall Meaning

The song Memory from the musical Cats is a powerful ballad sung by the character Grizabella, a former glamour cat who was shunned by her peers and now longs for her past life. The opening lyrics set a lonely and melancholic scene, with the singer standing in the moonlight on a deserted street. The imagery of the withered leaves collecting at their feet and the wind beginning to moan creates a desolate atmosphere. The mention of the moon losing its memory suggests a metaphor for Grizabella's own fading memory of happier times.

The chorus, "Memory all alone in the moonlight," serves as a refrain throughout the song and is a poignant reminder of Grizabella's isolation. She longs to revisit the past when she "was beautiful" and "knew what happiness was." The lyrics convey a deep sense of longing and nostalgia and are beautifully complemented by Andrew Lloyd Webber's haunting melody.

The final verse is a bittersweet acknowledgement that no matter how hard Grizabella tries to hold onto her memories, time will inevitably move on, and a new day will begin. The line "Touch me, it's so easy to leave me, all alone with my memory" speaks to the human desire for connection and understanding. Despite Grizabella's tragic past, the song ends on a hopeful note, with the promise of a new beginning.

Sometimes, our cat is just meowing at the middle of the night with no apparent reason. I just pretend that she's just singing Memory. Well, probably she is.

The fact that this song is about an old unwanted cat that just wants to be touched and loved makes it so sad. You can imagine she had a loving home and was then discarded. Those are the happy memories she refers to. Now each day she hopes she'll find that happiness again only for the day to end without it. Also, it's a message not to overlook the senior cat with the matted fur. Give them a chance. Touch them and YOU'LL see what happiness is and the happy memories will live again for that cat as they'll once again be loved. 😭😭😭😭 #adoptdontshop
