Dreaming With The Incubus
Cauldron Born Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was back in the time of Victorian splendor
When into the nightmare of lust she fell
Like the flower in November she could not surrender
Across the dark countryside she seemed to sail

She always walked in the light she was purer than white
For no one her head would turn
The young court magician his glance cast aside
Her heart cast in flames to burn

Dreaming With
Dreaming With
Dreaming With
The Incubus

It was back in the time of Victorian splendor
When into the eternal sleep she fell
Like the Earth in December she could not surrender
And into the pitch of nighttime she sailed

Slipping into shadow slipping out of sight
Darkness provides what can't be given in light

She shivered at his touch his heart was cold
Not of the kind that flesh would hold

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cauldron Born's song Dreaming With The Incubus tell the tale of a woman who falls into a nightmare of lust during the Victorian era. The lyrics paint a picture of an innocent and pure woman who never had her head turned by anyone, until the young court magician came along. She fell deeply in love with the magician, but he ultimately ignored her advances, which caused her heart to burn. In her desperation, the woman ended up falling into the arms of the incubus, a demon who preys on women in their dreams, as she sailed across the dark countryside.

The second verse of the song shifts to the woman falling into eternal sleep, unable to surrender. The lyrics indicate that darkness provides what cannot be given in the light, suggesting that the woman found something in the incubus that she couldn't find in real life or in the light. The lyrics also suggest that the incubus's touch was both alluring and chilling, not the kind of touch that flesh would hold. This could indicate that the woman's experience with the incubus was both passionate and terrifying.

Overall, the lyrics of Dreaming With The Incubus tell a haunting narrative of a woman who falls into a dark and dangerous world, seeking love and passion but ultimately being consumed by it.

My fellow brothers and sisters, this song speaks truly, we must remember what our ancestors went through so we could live. I am a druid, and even though I like many others are still persecuted, I listen to this song and remember that our ancestors died so that we could live. Now we can finally thank them, though still we are hunted in many places, we may now turn and say to our assailants that we defy them. Remember the Burning Times, and try to stop there coming again.

Every Time I hear this song the Goddess in me rises up and tears cannot stop coming from my eyes for all our brothers and sisters who lost their lives.

The saddest part is some places in the world Witchcraft and Paganism is still Persecuted. Here in Australia the laws were only lifted in some states as early as 2001. Before that you could still be arrested for practicing, though I have never heard of it being enforced though.
