Get It Right
Cavanaugh Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The man who only lives for making money
Lives a life that isn't necessarily sunny
Likewise the man who works for fame

There's no guarantee that time won't erase his name
The fact is, the only work that really brings enjoyment
Is the kind that is for girl and boy meant
Fall in love and you won't regret it
That's the best work of all, if you can get it
Holding hands at midnight

'Neath a starry sky
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try
Strolling with the one girl
Sighing sigh after sigh
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?
Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow
It's nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won't you tell me how?"

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?
Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow

Nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won't you tell me how?"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cavanaugh's "Get It Right" talk about how the pursuit of money and fame does not necessarily lead to happiness. The first two lines refer to two different types of people - those who live to make money and those who work for fame. Even though they may appear to have ideal lives, the lyrics suggest that it is not necessary that they are happy. The second stanza speaks about how the only work that brings true happiness is the one that is meant for a girl and boy. It refers to people falling in love as the best work of all.

The subsequent lines of the song describe the simple pleasures in life - holding hands, strolling with the person you love, and so on. The final lines talk about the perfect situation - finding someone who loves you, taking vows together, and suggests that it's a great accomplishment if someone can have that kind of happiness in their life. The song reminds us that in the end, even though it's not easy, love is the most important thing.
