Paul
Cavetown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the last time I saw Paul
I was horrible and almost let him in
But I stopped and caught the wall
And my mouth got dry
So all I did was take him for a spin

Yeah, we hopped inside my car
And I drove in circles 'round the freight train yard
And he turned the headlights off
Then he pulled the bottle out
And then he showed me what is love

I'll be your morning bright, goodnight, shadow machine
I'll be your record player, baby, if you know what I mean
I'll be your real tough cookie with the whiskey breath
I'll be your killer in a thriller and the cause of our death

In the blossom of the months
I was sure that I'd get driven off with thought
So I swallowed all of it
As I realized there was no one
Who could kiss away my shit

I'll be your morning bright, goodnight, shadow machine
I'll be your record player, baby, if you know what I mean
I'll be your real tough cookie with the whiskey breath
I'll be your killer in a thriller and the cause of our death

Paul, I know you said
That you'd take me any way I came or went
But I'll push you from my brain
See, you're gentle, baby, I couldn't stay
I'd only bring you pain

I was your starry-eyed lover and the one that you saw
I was your hurricane rider and the woman you'd call

We were just two moonshiners on the cusp of a breath
And I've been burning for you, baby, since the minute I left

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cavetown's song "Paul" are poignant and open to interpretation. The singer seems to be reflecting on a past relationship with someone named Paul, who they almost let back into their life but ultimately decided against it. The song touches on themes of love, regret, and the fear of causing pain to others.

In the first verse, the singer describes a moment where they almost gave into the temptation of reconnecting with Paul. They took him for a drive around the freight train yard, and he showed them what is love. However, despite this, the singer ultimately decides against pursuing anything further with Paul.

The chorus is a series of promises the singer makes to their love interest, offering to be their "morning bright, goodnight, shadow machine," their "record player," their "real tough cookie with the whiskey breath," and their "killer in a thriller and the cause of our death." The singer is expressing a willingness to be everything their partner wants and needs, even if it may be their undoing in the end.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on a period of time when they felt lost and without anyone to rely on. Despite this, they find someone who could love them, but ultimately they decide against it to save this person from suffering. The singer was the starry-eyed lover, the hurricane rider, and the woman Paul would call.

Overall, this song captures the fraught complexities of relationships and the difficult decisions we often have to make in love.

Let's just straight-up address this, 'cause the only way to move past your problems is to face them.

We all posted dumb shit when we were younger.
Everyone makes mistakes.

I know... deep down, you're a beautiful person, Robin.
You found humility, and I'm giving you forgiveness. Two of the best things a human can possess.

Also, I'm tickled you find clarity by making music. Sitting down at my old Baldwin upright calms me as well... and I've got an angry old soul!

Please... make more music. Share your catharsis with us. We love it, and we love you.
Never let ANYTHING stop you from doing what makes you whole.

@pyrusspangj

Cavetown has been here to help me whenever I needed him.
I discovered him in 8th grade, and I immediately became attached.
His music made me happy and rang as a staple in my first physical relationship.
His music comforted me when my grandfather passed away.
His music supported me when I would cry for hours on end in pure grief and despair.
His music suppressed me from screaming out loud when I would be breathless from sobbing.
His music accompanied me in those lonely quarantine nights.
His music made me feel like it was okay to cry and release my bottled up emotions.
His music hugged me when I was stuck in an abusive relationship.
His music guided me to better choices when someone new came to me.
His music lifted me when I could feel hope and love again.
And still today, I will listen to him on a regular basis and I think back on everything that has happened and how he was always there for me.
Thank you, Robbie <3
