PEARL
Cedar Hill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He sees her sittin' by the gate post
As his truck pulls in the yard
He knows all day she's waited for him there
And even though he's bone tired
He finds the strength to smile
It's good to know at least somebody cares

So they walk up to the front porch
Where they sit there side by side
She wags her tail as he talks about his day
He says my Pearl your wait is over
We'll go huntin' when it dawn
And I'll keep quiet and hear what you have to say

You can sing your song for me
Throw your sweet voice to the wind
That music makes me shiver to the bone
When I hear the hollow ringing
I know your singin' just for me
And it's then that I don't feel so all alone
For a while I don't feel so all alone

The years go by hunts come and go
Both man and dog grow old
And they're both convinced they'll pass without a trace
One December day he knows it's time
He hugs his sweetheart's neck
And he whispers Pearl please run me one more race

Pearl sing your song for me
Throw your sweet voice to the wind
That music makes me shiver to the bone
When I hear the hollow ringing
I know your singin' just for me
And it's then that I don't feel so all alone
For a while I don't feel so all alone

I sit outside the same house
Where the old man lived and died
And I'm watching Pearl's puppies fight and play
Both dad and Pearl have gone away
But their spirits linger on
And on a cool clear morn I hear my daddy say

Pearl sing your song for me
Throw your sweet voice to the wind
That music makes me shiver to the bone
You got the good Lords ears a ringing
As you praise His holy name
And up here I don't feel so all alone

Pearly Mae we finally made it home
My sweet Pearly Mae we finally made it home

Overall Meaning

The song "Pearl" by Cedar Hill is a touching tribute to a loyal hunting dog and the bond between a man and his four-legged friend. The song tells the story of a man who returns home after a long day at work to find his faithful dog waiting for him by the gate post. Despite being bone tired, he musters the strength to smile, knowing that at least there is someone there who cares about him. The two of them walk up to the front porch and sit side by side, with the man talking about his day and the dog wagging her tail in response. He tells Pearl that they will go hunting when dawn breaks and that he'll keep quiet and listen to her sing her sweet song. The music makes him shiver to the bone, and for a while, he doesn't feel so alone.

As the years go by, the man and his dog get older, and they're both convinced that they'll pass without a trace. One December day, the man knows that it's time, so he hugs Pearl's neck and whispers to her to run him one more race. He wants to hear her sing her song one last time, to throw her sweet voice to the wind and make his heart shiver. When the man finally passes away, his spirit lingers on, and on a cool clear morning, his son hears him asking Pearl to sing her song once again. When she does, the music makes him shiver to the bone, and he knows that even in death, his father is not alone.

I'm the guy who wrote that song and I think your video to it is great! Frank and the gang really did a fine job of capturing the essence of what I was trying to express.

One of the more touching and real-life stories and songs. Just wish whoever put those lyrics in the video would have got them right. Hats off to you, the songwriter.

@@marthavaughan4660 I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I just saw this. So the story behind the song...Our father and mother split up when I was a junior in high school. Dad is a professional hermit and lives at the Haverstick Homeplace all by himself in the heart of the very rural Missouri Ozarks. He sees folks when he wants to but, at the time I wrote the song, his main company was his pack of Walker running hounds. I was visiting with him one weekend when he started talking about his lonely life, which was odd since he never talks about that stuff. He said that since all us kids had moved away (I have a brother and sister), he really didn't have anybody to share his life with except his dogs. I could feel his emptiness as he told me that and it just broke my heart. The conversation stuck with me and inspired me to write the song. Fortunately, Dad is still alive and kicking although his beloved hounds have all gone to the Happy Hunting Grounds.
