In 1950, Cruz made her first major breakthrough, after the lead singer of the La Sonora Matancera, a renowned Cuban orchestra, left the group and Cruz was called to fill in. Cruz was hired permanently by the orchestra, but she wasn't well accepted by the public at first. However, the orchestra stood by their decision, and soon Cruz became famous throughout Cuba. During the 15 years she was a member, the band traveled all over Latin America.

Ay, mi Cuba cómo yo quiero a mi Cuba
Ay, mi Cuba cómo yo quiero a mi Cuba
Tremenda satisfacción cantarle a Cuba
Y a usted, moré
(Beny Moré, esta guajira es para ti)
Santa Isabel de las Lajas querida
(Beny Moré, esta guajira es para ti)
Baila mi son para guarachar
(Beny Moré, esta guajira es para ti)
Guantánamo, aquí va mi son
(Beny Moré, esta guajira es para ti)
Ay, mi Cuba ay, mi Cuba
Ay, mi Cuba cómo te quiero, mi Cuba
The lyrics of Celia Cruz's "Ay! Mi Cuba" express the singer's love and adoration for her home country, Cuba. She sings about the pride she feels for her country's flag and how she is inspired to sing and make music when she sees it. The second verse addresses the political turmoil and changes that have occurred in Cuba, however Cruz reminds her listeners that the original flag is still the true symbol of their country. She references Beny Moré, a popular Cuban musician who also sang about Cuba, and dedicates the song to him in the final verses. Cruz also mentions various cities in Cuba such as Santa Isabel de las Lajas and Guantánamo, highlighting the diversity and richness of Cuban culture.
The song captures the essence of Cuban pride and nationalism, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage and identity. Despite the political changes and challenges faced by the country, Cruz's lyrics reflect a deep connection to the land and the people. The song's upbeat rhythm and cheerful melody also reflect the vibrancy and liveliness of Cuban music.
