In 1950, Cruz made her first major breakthrough, after the lead singer of the La Sonora Matancera, a renowned Cuban orchestra, left the group and Cruz was called to fill in. Cruz was hired permanently by the orchestra, but she wasn't well accepted by the public at first. However, the orchestra stood by their decision, and soon Cruz became famous throughout Cuba. During the 15 years she was a member, the band traveled all over Latin America.

La Sonora Matancera es sin duda la mejor orquesta de musica afro-cubana de TODOS los tiempos. Solo un dato para apoyar lo anterior: las presentaciones en Radio Progreso eran LIVE, usando solo UN MICROFONO y obviously just ONE take! Hicieron centenares de estas actos que eran broadcast semanalmente por toda la isla. Los arreglos siempre fueron geniales y la estatura musical de los componentes del grupo: sobresaliente. Sin embargo, la version mas conocida de esta cancion es la de Fellove, que es muy buena y "arra nged" por Chucho Valdez lider de Irakere --en mi opinion el mejor grupo cubano despues de la Matancera, aunque es un grupo mas afin al Latin Jazz, pero tambien distinguiendose en esa categoria como el mejor del mundo!
