Breakaway
Celine Dion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From the fire in your words
To the dagger in your eye
I just have to lay my body down
Go and lay my body down
I pretend to be asleep
But I know you hear me cry
I just have to lay my body down
Go and lay my body down

But if I
Really want a change
Then I must admit
That I'm the one to blame

If I could break away
Cut the cord
For worse or better
If I could turn the page
At last and say
Goodbye forever
But on the other side
Of yesterday
Beyond the heartache
What if all I am
Without the pain
Is empty hearted?
I could break away

Is it true what people say
That it's darkest before dawn?
I just have to lay my body down
Go and lay my body down
Any hope we might have saved
Is too weak to let live on
I just have to lay my body down
Go and lay my body down

And if I
Really want a change
Then tonight I'm gonna need
All of my strength

If I could break away
Cut the cord
For worse or better
If I could turn the page
At last and say
Goodbye forever
But on the other side
Of yesterday
Beyond the heartache
What if all I am
Without the pain
Is empty hearted?
I could break away

Oh, anything is better than this (anything is better, anything is better)
I know
Anything is better

If I could break away
Cut the cord
For worse or better
If I could turn the page
At last and say
Goodbye forever
But on the other side
Of yesterday
Beyond the heartache
What if all I am
Without the pain
Is empty hearted?

If I could break away
If I could turn the page
But on the other side
Of yesterday
Beyond the heartache
What if all I am
Without the pain

Is empty hearted?
I could break away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Celine Dion's "Breakaway" convey a powerful message about the struggle to leave behind a toxic, painful situation. The singer is caught in a relationship that is emotionally and perhaps even physically abusive. She feels trapped and powerless, enduring the pain silently while fantasizing about being able to break away. The opening lines, "From the fire in your words to the dagger in your eye," describe the hostility and aggression that she faces from her partner. Despite her attempts to hide her pain, she cannot help but cry herself to sleep each night.

The second stanza reveals the singer's desire for change, but also her uncertainty and fear. She questions whether leaving the relationship will truly bring her the happiness she seeks, or if it will only leave her feeling "empty hearted." The lyrics capture the ambivalence and complexity of the decision to leave an abusive relationship, as the singer weighs the benefits of escape against the uncertainty and unknowns that lie ahead. Ultimately, the chorus delivers a message of empowerment and hope, as the singer imagines a future of possibilities: "If I could break away...I could turn the page."

Overall, "Breakaway" is a poignant and relatable portrayal of a difficult and painful situation. It acknowledges the complexity of leaving a toxic relationship, the fear of the unknown that often accompanies such a decision, and the hope that awaits on the other side.

@@2009RafkaShe's not. She's one of the best. I think Whitney Houston was the best. Celine Dion deserve this title for sure, but Whitney is intouchable and the best singer of all time in my opnion.

Celine is the most emotional singer out there. She puts the feelings, and emotions into every song she sings. So many writers talk of how she brings their music to life. She is the epitome of what an vocalist should be. An artist that can convey the true depth of emotion the writer intended, or even beyond that.
