Six Days
Cellar Darling Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the first day of nothing
The moon told him to go
Or punished he shall be
With gusts of freezing cold.
On the second day of nothing
The sun begged him to leave
Or she shall embrace him,
Burns deep under his skin.
On the third day of nothing
The planets screamed with rage
United they'd be and
Cast him out with flames.
On the fourth day of nothing
The Devil said hello.
Embracing all the gods he knew,
The game they shall begin.
On the fifth day of nothing
He felt his skin dissolve
And felt the rain pouring down
Although the sky was dry.
The world it has vanished,
All that's left it's shards of stone
And one faithful man who hasn't yet let go
The universe swallowed
Every single thing he loved
And the planets don't know, oh,
Why he's holding on.
Hold on to a fraction of your sanity
Hold on, ooh
Go on, live in consciousness eternally
Go on, ooh
On the sixth day of nothing
Salvation was announced
It rang aloud in his head
Only for him to hear
Surrounding him vast nothingness
The punishments at halt

And all that he could ask himself was
"Why did I hold on?"

Overall Meaning

Cellar Darling's song "Six Days" is a haunting tale of a man who survives the end of the world, as we know it. The lyrics describe a journey that unfolds across six days of nothingness, where the man is confronted by various cosmic entities, each warning him of dire consequences if he continues to hold on. On day one, the moon warns him to leave, and he faces the threat of freezing. On day two, the sun begs him to go, or he will burn under its heat. The planets scream at him on day three, threatening to cast him out with flames. On the fourth day, the Devil appears, and the gods prepare to play a game. On day five, his world crumbles, and he holds on, trying to make sense of it all. And finally, on the sixth day, he hears a salvation announcement, but it’s too late. He can't let go of the past.

The lyrics are a metaphor for the human condition, where we cling to life, even in the face of adversity. One can relate to the character's predicament, where they face the end of everything they knew and devolve into a state of despair. Yet, despite the bleakness of the situation, the chorus encourages the listener to hold on and go on, suggesting that there is always hope, even in the darkest of times.

We have so many "mainstream" songs these days that we forgot how awesome music can be. Most of the time we praise songs that are a little bit of different of others, but in reality they are nothing special. This is not those kind of music. Seriously, we need more of this! Much more! Songs that are art and trigger your feelings from the roots of your being. Be it bad feelings or good. This song encompasses of your humanity: you feel good (the survival of the last being in the universe), you feel adventurous (traveling through the nothingness), you feel sad and you cry (because nobody is there with the last being of the universe, so what is the point of existing anymore?). We need more of this! WE NEED MORE OF THIS!

@Closminding I believe you misunderstand me a bit here. I didn't write that all mainstream music is bad, that's why I put the word mainstream in quotes. For example, Snow from Red Hot Chili Peppers was played on the radio lots of times back in - I dunno - 2006 or 2007 and I loved it. But there are many mainstream music that are pushed and hyped for an audience that has nothing new to offer and are basically copy-pasted. It's like the boy bands in the 90's (Backstreet Boys, Nsync etc), they basically did all the same music and were just there for the sales and numbers, nothing more, nothing less. But again, if someone likes that kind of music, there is nothing wrong with that. We are all different in taste and that's ok in my book! The more the merrier...

Closminding

And you can have her all to yourself in that exclusive club called 'non-mainstream'

Closminding

@Timothy Mallon But yeah - you make your musical bed and you lie on it.

Closminding

@Timothy Mallon Plus you deprive a wider audience of hearing you, which is also sad because in her case she deserves to be heard.

Closminding

@Timothy Mallon Yeah and you reap the consequences which in her case will be obscurity - sadly.

If Dante Alighieri was born thirty-five years ago I think that he would have used Cellar Darling songs to describe heaven perfectly. And, obviously, there would have been Anna Murphy instead of Beatrice. This is the best thing I am able to say to describe the perfect style of Cellar Darling and I still think this is not enough... Congratulations, guys! I hope your songs will be listened all over the world, and even over the moon, the sun and all the planets of the Universe!
