Greensleeves
Celtic Lassies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alas my love, ye do me wrong,
to cast me off discourteously:
And I have loved you so long
Delighting in your companie.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

Thy smock of silk, both faire and white,
with gold embrodered gorgeously:
Thy peticote of Sendall right:
and thus I bought thee gladly.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

I bought three kerchers to thy head,
that were wrought fine and gallantly:
I kept thee both boord and bed,
Which cost my purse wel favouredly.

I have been readie at your hand,
to grant what ever you would crave.
I have both waged life and land,
your love and good will for to have.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,

Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Celtic Lassies' song Greensleeves are about a man who has been in love with a woman for a long time, and is hurt that she has cast him off discourteously. He loved her company and sings about his joy, delight, and heart of gold when he was with her. He describes the things he bought for her, such as her fair and white smock embroidered with gold and her fine and gallant kerchers, as well as how he kept her fed and housed at great cost to his purse. He has even offered his life and land to win her love and good will. Despite all of this, she has rejected him, leaving him heartbroken.

The song's title, Greensleeves, refers to a green sleeveless tunic, which was a popular garment during the Renaissance period in England. The song has been interpreted in many ways by different scholars and historians, but most agree that it was likely composed in the late 16th century, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Line by Line Meaning

Alas my love, ye do me wrong,
Oh my beloved, you have treated me unfairly,

to cast me off discourteously:
by rejecting me in a rude manner:

And I have loved you so long
And yet I have loved you for so long,

Delighting in your companie.
enjoying your company.

Greensleeves was all my joy
I found nothing but joy in the green sleeves,

Greensleeves was my delight,
Those green sleeves gave me great pleasure,

Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
Those green sleeves were my most precious possession,

And who but my lady greensleeves.
And who else but my lady with the green sleeves.

Thy smock of silk, both faire and white,
Your silk dress, so beautiful and white,

with gold embrodered gorgeously:
embroidered with golden threads so wonderfully:

Thy peticote of Sendall right:
And your satin underskirt so fine:

and thus I bought thee gladly.
I bought these for you with great pleasure.

I bought three kerchers to thy head,
I also bought you three headscarves,

that were wrought fine and gallantly:
which were beautifully made and adorned:

I kept thee both boord and bed,
I provided for you both board and bed,

Which cost my purse wel favouredly.
Which I paid for willingly from my purse.

I have been readie at your hand,
I have always been ready to do your bidding,

to grant what ever you would crave.
to fulfill any of your wishes.

I have both waged life and land,
I have risked my life and my land,

your love and good will for to have.
to earn your love and goodwill.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Again, I reiterate that the green sleeves were my only source of happiness,

Greensleeves was my delight,
Those green sleeves were the only thing that made me truly happy,

Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
Those green sleeves were what I held most dear,

And who but my lady greensleeves.
And who else but you, my lady with the green sleeves.

Greensleaves lyrics
Alas, my love, you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously
And I have loved you oh so long
Delighting in your company

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady Greensleeves

If you intend to be this way
It does the more enrapture me
And even so I still remain
A lover in captivity

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady Greensleeves

Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu
God, I pray he will prosper thee
For I am still thy lover true
Come once again and love me

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady Greensleeves

My grandmother had a clock that was playing this tune. I remember it well from my childhood. Unfortunately, no one was able to tell me what the song was. I searched and searched but it was in vain. Everything has changed today. I've been watching Friends for the first time in a while. In season 9, Sandy's character played the melody on the flute. And as you know, finding anything from Friends is very simple. This month I am 19 years old and finally found this melody, I feel like some stage in my life is over.
