Brothers In Arms
Celtic Thunder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm

We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Overall Meaning

The song "Brothers In Arms" by Celtic Thunder is a powerful ballad about the bond between soldiers in war. The first verse describes how the singer has found a home in the mountains, but his heart is always rooted in the lowlands. He speaks to his fellow soldiers, telling them that someday they will leave the battlefield behind and return to their farms and families. They will no longer have to fight and will be able to exist peacefully as brothers.

The second verse speaks to the horrors of war, describing the fields of destruction that the singer and his companions have fought through. He has watched as they have struggled and suffered, yet they have remained loyal to one another. In the end, every man must die, as noted in the final verse, but the singer believes that war is foolish, as it pits brother against brother.

The song's chorus emphasizes that despite the fact that we live in different worlds and under different suns, we are all part of the same human family. The image of the "sun gone to hell" and the "moon's riding high" suggests that the soldiers are preparing for battle in the dark. The lines "it's written in the starlight, and every line on your palm" suggest that fate has predetermined the soldiers' outcomes, but they will remain loyal to one another regardless.

I would not venture to say that I have a favorite Celtic thunder performer because they are all equally and superbly awesome, but I do love several of Ryan's performances, this one and Desperado are a couple of my absolute favorites, as well as Heartbreaker, Every Breath You Take. Many nights I've enjoyed playing the first two video CDs and singing along with all the songs! 💖😍💚
