Maid Of Culmore
Celtic Thunder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Leaving sweet lovely Derry for fair London town
There is no finer harbor all around can be found
Where the youngsters, each evening, go down to the shore
And the joy bells are ringing for the maid of Culmore

The first time I saw her, she passed me by
And the next time I saw her, she bid me goodbye
But the last time I saw her, it grieved my heart sore
For she sailed down Loch Foyle and away from Culmore

If I had the power: the storms for to rise
I would make the wind blow out and I’d darken the skies
I’d make the wind blow high and the salt seas to roar
‘Til the day that my darling sailed away from Culmore

To the back parts of America, my love, I’ll go seek
For it’s there I know no one and no one knows me

But if I don’t find her, I’ll return home no more
Like a pilgrim I’ll wander for the maid of Culmore

Overall Meaning

The song "Maid of Culmore" sung by Celtic Thunder tells the story of a man who is heartbroken as his love interest, the Maid of Culmore, sails away from the place where they both once lived. The song begins with the man leaving Derry for London and acknowledging the beauty of the harbor in the town. He then describes how the younger people in town go down to the shore every evening, and how joy bells ring for the Maid of Culmore.

The man reminisces about the times when he first saw her, and how she bid him goodbye when he saw her the second time. The last time he saw her, she sailed away from Culmore, leaving him heartbroken. If he had the power, he would make the storms rise and try to stop her from leaving. He then concludes that if he doesn't find her in America, he will return home like a pilgrim, still in search of the Maid of Culmore.
