The Dutchman
Celtic Thunder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The Dutchman's not the kind of man
Who keeps his thumb jammed in the dam
That holds his dreams in,
But that's a secret that only Margaret knows.

When Amsterdam is golden in the summer,
Margaret brings him breakfast,
She believes him.
He thinks the tulips bloom beneath the snow.

He's mad as he can be, but Margaret only sees that sometimes,
Sometimes she sees her unborn children in his eyes.

Let us go to the banks of the ocean
Where the walls rise above the Zuider Zee.
Long ago, I used to be a young man
And dear Margaret remembers that for me.

The Dutchman still wears wooden shoes,
His cap and coat are patched with the love
That Margaret sewed there.
Sometimes he thinks he's still in Rotterdam.

And he watches the tug-boats down canals
An' calls out to them when he thinks he knows the Captain.
Till Margaret comes
To take him home again

Through unforgiving streets that trip him, though she holds his arm,
Sometimes he thinks he's alone and he calls her name.

Let us go to the banks of the ocean
Where the walls rise above the Zuiderzee.
Long ago, I used to be a young man
And dear Margaret remembers that for me.

The winters whirl the windmills 'round
She winds his muffler tighter
And they sit in the kitchen.
Some tea with whiskey keeps away the dew.

And he sees her for a moment, calls her name,
She makes the bed up singing some old love song,
A song Margaret learned
When it was very new.

He hums a line or two, they sing together in the dark.
The Dutchman falls asleep and Margaret blows the candle out.

Let us go to the banks of the ocean
Where the walls rise above the Zuiderzee.

Long ago, I used to be a young man
And dear Margaret remembers that for me.

This one makes me cry. So beautiful and a haunting reminder of forever love through sickness and health. My mom remembers for my dad. He's beginning to show signs off dementia. Just the very beginning, but it's a frightening path to look down. But she loves him like the day they met and he loves her the same. Married nearly 51 years. Through good times and bad and in sickness and health. True love isn't ever easy, but it's worth it.

Hello Nix, This is the first time I've heard this song and it left me sobbing. I do feel for you and your mom. I lost my husband of 42 years recently to Dementia and it was Alzheimer’s that took his life. I cannot find words to express how terrible a disease it is, the best way is to say it's soul destroying. I loved him dearly just like your mom does and losing him has left me absolutely heartbroken. I just felt so terrible all the time cos there was nothing I could do to be of any help. What I think is it's not the patient whose suffering but the next of kin cos there's nothing worse than to see your loved one going downhill and deterioting all the time. I will remember both of you in my prayers that the Lord give you two the strength to deal with this horrific situation as best you can.
Take care, I just thought I'd like to send you and your mom this short note
Best regards - Dee Borthwick (retired to the South of France and have been here for the past 22 years now).
