Whiskey In The Jar
Celtic Thunder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was a goin' over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced my pistol and I then produced my rapier
Saying "Stand and deliver" for he were a bold deceiver

[Chorus]
Mush-a ring dum-a do dum-a da
Whack for my daddy-o. Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar

I counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy

[Chorus]

I went up to my chamber, all for to take a slumber
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure 't was no wonder
But Jenny drew me charges and she filled them up with water
Then sent for captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter

[Chorus]

't was early in the morning, just before I rose to travel
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrell
I first produced me pistol for she stole away me rapier
I couldn't shoot the water, so a prisoner I was taken

[Chorus]

Now there's some take delight in the carriages a rolling
and others take delight in the hurling and the bowling
but I take delight in the juice of the barley
and courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early

[Chorus]

If anyone can aid me 't is my brother in the army
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney
And if he'll go with me, we'll go rovin' through Killkenny
And I'm sure he'll treat me better than my own a-sporting Jenny

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

Celtic Thunder's song "Whiskey in the Jar" tells the story of a man who meets Captain Farrell while walking through the Kerry Mountains. The Captain was counting his money and the man pulls out his pistol and sword, demands the money, and calls the Captain a liar for saying that he has none. He takes the money and goes back to see his lover, Jenny, but she fills his gun with water and sets him up to be captured by Captain Farrell. In the final verse, the man sings that he enjoys "the juice of the barley" (whiskey) and will go "roving" with his brother if he can find him.

Throughout the song, it's apparent that the man is a bit of a rogue who enjoys robbing those he comes across on his travels. However, he is eventually caught in his own trap when his lover, who he thought was loyal, betrayed him. The song has a lively and upbeat melody, but the lyrics tell a darker and more complex story.

@celticgail

I saw Celtic Thunder live and they performed this song. The audience was enraptured with Neil and Keith's performance. To those of us who grew up listening to our parent's Clancy Brothers' Records, this was pure magic, a blend of an old Irish ballad with the beat of rock 'n roll. The Irish always have been the greatest poets, writers, songsters and lovers! My Irish grandfather loved Celtic music and would often play his fiddle, step dance and sing! He loved to have a whiskey with his memories!

@ScottishPyro13

They're the most amazing group I've ever seen or listened to. I loved their concert. If you get a chance, any little sort of chance to see them, take it.

@Deborahtrotter29

About half way through this one, the camera shows two little identical twin boys. They are adorable and definitely enjoying the show.
