You Raise Me Up
Celtic Thunder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up
To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up
To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up
To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up
To more than I can be.

You raise me up
To more than I can be.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Celtic Thunder’s “You Raise Me Up” describe the profound effect that someone’s love and support can have on an individual. The first verse conveys an image of someone feeling exhausted and burdened with troubles, and finding peace in quiet reflection until the presence of a loved one arrives. The subsequent verses express the transformative power of this love and support, allowing the individual to rise above difficulties and achieve more than they thought possible.

The repetitive use of the phrase “You raise me up” emphasizes the idea that it is the love and support of another person that is responsible for the changes and growth experienced by the individual. The mountains and stormy seas represent challenges that are overcome with the help of this support, and the image of standing on someone’s shoulders portrays a sense of mutual trust and reliance. Ultimately, the lyrics suggest that it is through the help of others that we can achieve our full potential and become the best version of ourselves.

Overall, the song is a tribute to the idea of being lifted up by others and achieving more than what one would be capable of alone. It brings a message of hope, resilience, and appreciation for the people in our lives who help us become better versions of ourselves.

My introduction to Celtic Thunder was this performance. Flipping the channel 10+ years ago - this "scene" was on PBS --- I was Hooked!
That A at the end of You Raise Me Up????? Absofreakinglutely Amazing!!!
He also sang Recuerda me in this concert - equally amazing/impressive!
We got tickets for my birthday in September that year- it happened to work out that they were playing in Camden NJ - right across the river from Philadelphia, our home - and the dates were the week ifof my birthday!!!
We were about 10 rows back in the center, and by the time we went to the concert, I pretty much knew not only all of the songs, but the Arrangements too!!!
Good rugby player who supports Ireland (and Wales 😊) that I - when they got to Ireland's Call -- tears were Pouring down my face as we all sang along!
One of the absolute best nights in the Theatre of my Life!!!!!
.....Thank you boys!

Yes! Incredible voice. Perfectly delivered. The beginning is so delicatel, gentle, delivered in almost a whisper, as Paul holds back on power. He saves that for the punch during the finale of the song. He hits the finale forcefully and then comes off the note almost immediately to end with another crescendo that emphasizes each of the last words of the song. One can really see his training there. Not many professional singers can do that. Such beautiful restraint, yet he delivers such power toward the end of the song. So very beautiful. And those high notes- incredible! Wow.

Paul is on StageIt periodically. Great streaming platform. Other Celtic Thunder singers perform on the site periodically as well. Very reasonable prices.
