Away in a Manger
Celtic Woman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Away in a manger,
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing
The Baby awakes
A little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
'Til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray

Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care

And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there

Overall Meaning

The song "Away in a Manger" is a classic Christmas hymn that has been sung for generations. The first verse sets the scene of where the baby Jesus was born, as he lay in a manger with no crib or bed to sleep in. The second verse speaks of the beauty of the starry sky on the night of his birth and how it looked down on the humble stable where He lay surrounded by the animals. The third verse speaks to the peacefulness of the scene where the baby was laid, even as the cattle make noises nearby. It is said that Jesus was not an ordinary child, he was the Son of God and therefore did not cry like other children. Finally, in the fourth verse, the singer of the song is asking Jesus to watch over them till morning when they will wake up.

The final verse is a call for Jesus to be near and provide protection, love and care. The line "Bless all the dear children" acknowledges the love of Jesus for all people, young and old, rich or poor, weak or strong. The phrase, "Thy tender care," highlights his loving, compassionate nature. The last line "To live with Thee there," makes reference to the ultimate goal of every Christian; to spend eternity with Jesus in heaven.

Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing
The Baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

I love You, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
Until morning is nigh

Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask You to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray

Bless all the dear children
In Your tender care
And fit us for heaven
To live with You there
