It's pretty common near the coast because the water table is so shallow.
We had a hurricane that hit Cameron Louisiana and the cemeteries didn't do well. When the water came inland the vaults came up out of the ground, the caskets pushed the lids off and body parts were all over the place.
Different levels of decomposition were observed and bodies were clearly visible.
They are slowly being cleaned up and the vaults are being reburied.
Unfortunately many remains were scattered about or washed away.
You said it....... cremation.
This should be the standard method of disposing of the body in low lying coastal areas.
It's not really disgusting or horrifying if you've seen it before, it's just hunan remains that should be collected and properly disposed of.
As adults we understand that bodies which have flesh on them are naturally consumed rather quickly.
Personally, I think these old hurricane damaged cemeteries should have temporary fencing around them with "keep out" signs because the visual shock could be traumatizing to children.

By who? Unless there is an actual law on the books that says a cemetery has to be maintained to a certain standard and specifies who is responsible for it, no law has actually been broken. And the criminal negligence claim is a joke. Law doesn't work like that. Not maintaining a graveyard doesn't meet the legal definition of "criminal" anywhere.

As a Funeral arranger and officiant, there isn't one single grave that has gone into that ground went in without the absolute shattered heart of their loved-ones. Some of those folk used what little money they had to give their people a "proper" burial. It hurts my heart after looking into the eyes of an elderly gentleman say something like "Could Margaret be buried with her dentures? She was a lady and would want to look pretty as she could". You let me know. I'm in England these days, but if you want to take up-for this cemetery or others, I will throw in. You’d think the local population would be eager to get this cemetery back to some sort of normality!
Why should someone who doesn’t live in the local vicinity care more for these lost souls than anyone who does live there?
Society today is getting sadder and sadder. Everyone is just so selfish, and materialistic.
I’m afraid I live in the U.K, but if it was local to me I’d come and help. These graves deserve to be repaired and looked after.

Louisiana has been this way for decades. I have been there 4 times starting in the late 60’s…it’s an expectation at those cemeteries due to being buried above ground… like you said… the families have all passed away and can’t advocate for these bodies. In Pennsylvania we have care-takers who are paid to take care of the cemetery grounds. Usually, a house is provided for the care-taker and their family either right on the grounds or very close by so there is some added security for the grounds. I feel very sorry for the souls buried in the Louisiana cemeteries. It's so sad to see that.

I'm not Surprised. I have begun getting into genealogy and visiting Cemeteries. I have seen many graveyards In disarray. Overgrown grass, toppled graves, garbage strewn about. Thank you for shining a light on this. These men and women deserve respect. The law is spotty in this area, especially with holding parties responsible accountable for the upkeep. This really needed to be addressed and I hope your advocacy helps that.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I definitely am getting cremated. I saw a guy that moves dead bodies from old graves. Ten years and more the body starts turning to dust. So cremation is just a quicker route because "ashes to ashes, dust to dust".
It's just too sad seeing the uncaring of the death. It's so nice of you, but it shouldn't fall on you to take care of this cemetery. The state, county or community should care.

In less the cemetery comes with perpetual care . It is often up to the family to take care of their on lots. Ever by doing it there selves or hiring someone to take care of it. Sometimes there is no one left to do it. This will be different cemeteries. This why in many cemeteries you can see different spots where some look nice and some spots are raged out. .

My view is people sometimes put to much emphasis on human remains. To me the spirit is far more important. Many of my faimly have passed on . But I when my earthly Father passed on I touched his body realize he was gone the body was empty. I don't need a fancy burial spot or beautiful cemetery to bring me memories. The memories are already been planted. . With that being said and the fact I worked in cemeteries most of my life. I even lived in one for a couple of years. I do like walking through them reading the names and dates. The history. I saw a stone that had the ancestors several generations back. I thought that was cool. The ancestors came from France. . But lots of people don't have that kind of money. . For that. So I don't think cemeteries should be top priorities.

I live in Louisiana, unfortunately here in Louisiana the water table is very high. Especially in the coastal areas. When it's been flooded, the graves can pop up if buried in the ground. Depending on where this is located. People and relatives might not know what happened to the cemetery yet.

Thank you for trying to hard to get those people to do something about this. You need, however, to contact the media. Send compies of your correspondence to every newspaper and TV station along with pictures and tell them that the bones remain lying on the ground. It's just disgraceful. Doesn't the guy who mows the lawn care enough to mention this to his bosses?! I realize Louisiana is a red state--and by definition, poor but I mean, really. When I visit cemeteries, which I love to do, I'm constantly righting flower pots, flags, etc. I try to tidy up cemeteries wherever I go. The poor people are dead and can't do it! lol Help them out.

I share the sadness of seeing the cemetery in ruins like this, but I think eventually, this will happen to many more cemeteries across the country. It's sad, but our society just doesn't seem to care about them as they once did. What is even more disturbing to me, is that when the camera peeks into the vaults and crypts. One expects to see remains , but litter? There were a few shots where I saw empty drink bottles and other refuse items where you would not expect to find any.

In 1965 as I was enroute to New Orleans, I stopped off at an obviously very old "Above Ground" Cemetery, out of curiosity.
There was a circular drive through where several crumbling crypts were easily viewed.
To this day, I have vivid memories of seeing the exposed bones and a few skulls.

It's not your responsibility to clean up the cemetery, but as a youtuber showing everyone the condition of this cemetery, you are able to bring community awareness. Exactly. Not all of these graves are very old, either. Like towards the end theres a soldier who was buried in 93. People pay a lot of money for burial sites. Whoever owns/runs the grounds is neglecting care of this place.

I love going to old cemeteries. Love taking photos, but this is not one I would want to visit. Have visited some with the headstones broken and sunken in the ground but have never seen anything like this This saddens me so much. But as you said their families are probably all gone, maybe moved from the area/ Most people in the area probably don't think about the damage caused by the hurrucane. If it's an area that no one visits they don't think about it. I don't blame the young people for not taking care of it, it does upset me when graves are vandalized or possibly robbed. It really upsets me that you tried to take care of them and you were shuffled around from one person to the next and got nowhere.

hi harmin. i'm from the uk and, thankfully, we don't get hurricanes over here, well there was one back in the seventies or early eighties, but i'm sure if we did there would be cemeteries that would look just like that one. i always thought that when you bought your plot some of that money would be used to maintain the cemetery. when you see the amount of graves in there, that's an awful lot of money and i'm certain that it would have been banked and collected interest. i'm so glad that there are people out there, like yourself, that care about these things. this was a really sad, yet thought provoking video. thank you harmin for sharing it.

@Pat Cardiff hi pat, i was thinking more of some of the cemeteries in and around london. a lot of them were considered to be full and just left to there own devices. a lot of them are totally overgrown and where there are trees the roots have pushed the coffins and tombs out of the ground, the lids of both have been broken and there are human remains that can be seen. there is loads of graffiti everywhere and although it has been said that there are plans to restore these cemeteries nothing has been done yet. i don't live in london anymore and found this when visiting relatives. take care

I think it's beautiful that nature reclaims her own. Burying people in concrete tombs is just not natural. I'd be out there if I lived closer with some concrete resealing those remains back in though, that's just a shame.

A person is only two or three generations from being forgotten for eternity. These poor souls have been forgotten. In my county we have the Pioneer Cemetery Commission. They maintain cemeteries that have had fewer than 12 burials in the past 50 years. They all are immaculate.

One of the reasons why you will see exposed human remains in Louisiana cemeteries, is because normal burial of human remains is impossible. This is because, the water table in Louisiana, especially in New Orleans, is inches to maybe a 2-3 feet below the top soil. In contrast, in most of North America the water table is at least 20 feet below the top soil. Therefore in Louisiana, intact human remains are entombed in above ground tombs and mausoleums for the most part Graves,if dug are very shallow with concrete ot granite slabs placed above the remains.

In the late 1960s, our dad drove our RV through Tijuana, Mexico, on our way to beach camping south in Ensenada. There was one area on the south of Tijuana where there was an old cemetery on a slope next to the road. There were a few exposed wood coffins and various bones were spilled out in the dirt. The coffins were very old and rotten, and the cemetery appeared to be abandoned. Sad to see remains just gradually being washed down the hillside.

What an absolute disgrace that these people’s Rest In Peace has been disturbed in so many ways. Damage from hurricanes is inevitable, yes, but is there nothing in place to respond to hurricane damage in cemeteries? Many of these people might not have relatives in the area anymore. It’s possible the families who are still in the area probably don’t have the means to repair catastrophic damage of any kind.

Hurricane damage is probably not the only cause of damage here. I live in a part of the country where these types of vaults aren’t as common, but we do have them. When there is damage due to grave robbing, those are the types of vaults that are typically targeted. It sounds horrible because it is. As I look at the damage here, one looks like something large and heavy landed on it hard enough to split the concrete lid into two pieces. Others look like they deteriorated over time to the point that a hurricane could easily create an opening, or someone could make entry through a side, like one you showed towards the end of the video.

Damage to this extent in a cemetery that is in plain sight of the public, especially when human remains are exposed AND visible should have been addressed. I don’t know if FEMA would be able to be of help but it sounds like a good idea to ask. Have you checked to see if you can find out who owns the cemetery? The owner is just as responsible for its upkeep and condition, which is obviously deplorable.

I hope you’re able to find a way to get this matter before those who can help restore this cemetery and others like it. Good luck to you.

I'm so sad for these forgotten people. The city should have something in place to repair and keep this cemetery nice to visit. I like to visit cemeteries because so many deceased have no one left. I like to pay my respects to all I come across.

It truly is heartbreaking! I am not really knowledgeable about what damage is done by hurricanes to the cemeteries, but a lot of the damage I see seems to be from vandalism and grave theft.

Live well, love the people whose lives we share our own with, and maybe someday we can find a way to come together to find a way to sort out not only the kind of mess we have in that cemetery, but in the others as well. But I’d rather help the people actually living in that community first, given a choice to dedicate money, time, and opportunity to either do that or to work on this (or any other) cemetery. I’ll say again that our legacy (or at least my own- I hope) is going to be more than just where we end up when we die.

I think a tall fence around the property is as much as can be done. Although a few of the graves were as recent as the 1990's, I doubt that any surviving family would want to (or be able to) pay for upkeep. It's sad, but this sort of thing will eventually happen to most all cemeteries. Everything is temporary.

There are many, many bad aging cemetery situations out there but yes I agree this one is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. After watching a few similar videos over the last few years I am certain that regardless of what we do, after a few hundred years pass this is always going to happen, even to our own graves. Sad thought for sure.

My hearts aches for the deceased. I wish I had the way and means to help do mowing and all that goes with it. Some strong men can help lift up the headstones that have fallen over and place them erect. I’m a 70 year old woman from Florida. Please... reach out and meet up to do a service that is very needed. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Can you set up a petition we can sign? Just a thought.

I'm from the Midwest. I've been to Louisiana once (1984). It was the first time I had seen so many above-ground vaults. I was told burials were done that way because of flooding/hurricanes. Being from the Midwest I was used to burials below ground including the vaults. After seeing this video it seems there might be more protection for the deceased if the remains/vaults were buried below ground.

This is just not acceptable these people deserve to have their graves fixed and how is it even legal to have all these human remains exposed like that? I think any one living their should be cremated to avoid these situations and I agree that is a big reason I am being cremated. This is absolutely NOT the worst in Louisiana. The worst is in Baton Rouge. Louisiana has a long history of abandoned cemeteries. I attended Thomy Lafon Elementary, and it was built on top of Oak Grove cemetery. I was wondering how could the city of New Orleans not know that. The school was rumored to be haunted, and it's past history came to light after the hurricane Katrina.

My wife and I go down to Bayou country regularly to fish and gorge ourselves on mudbugs during crawfish season. We usually roam the Baritaria, LA area. We went a little early last year around March 13. The previous August they were hit with a pretty bad hurricane. 7 MONTHS later there were piles of garbage and debris everywhere needing to be cleaned up, trash and debris littering the wetlands, shrimp boats still beached everywhere…it was absolutely awful. The one thing that sticks in my head more than anything and I took a picture of it was a coffin sticking straight up into the sky from its vault obviously from the cemetery being flooded out by the hurricane. I would think that after making sure everyone in the area was safe and being taken care of the first order of business would be to stick coffins back into ground. I couldn’t believe that no one took care of this 7 months later and that poor sob was still roasting in the Louisiana heat. Unbelievable..

I have family from Louisiana. Visited some cemeteries a few years ago. It was not pretty but you do have to consider the hurricanes that they’ve had over the years and I’m not sure what could be done. HOWEVER, there is no reason to have bones exposed in the cemetery; someone is mowing the grass!

Yes, the state of disrepair is sad but you have to remember that those bones are only what's left of the vehicle that carried the beings. Who they were along with their hopes and dreams died and moved on when they took their last breaths. The relics are just that: leftovers of a vehicle that transported a life. I hope their memories and names live on in the hearts of their loved ones and on the lips that maybe tell stories about them. Who they were, their lifeforce or essence or soul, is still here: it's just that their energy is rearranged.

This is so sad. I live in Virginia and these videos make me want to set up a non profit with a mission to protect and preserve these final resting places. If anyone knows of any abandoned or forgotten cemetery's in central Va please let me know, this shouldn't happen

I also live in Virginia. I am retired now but I was in the burial business. The grave part. I already mentioned things I seen in different cemeteries. One people don't always take into account is the cemetery is prepectoral care . Meaning someone takes care of it . Some people think because they are in a community cemetery it will be taken care but often it is not the case..So it becomes the family job to take care of it.. Across not all families will or are able to . This is why in many cemeteries you will have lots that look neat beside lots that are grown over. Lots of times when people are entitled to be buried somewhere because connections to who ever bought the lot will be upset when they see the spot because they will remember a nice looking cemetery like everything else things change over time Sometimes they may be prepectorial when it was first used but over time things it no longer is. So. If you look in what ever area you live you will probably find one not to far away. A lot of community cemeteries are like this. What I would recommend is for as many people who can get together and find a lawn service to help. At a price. This is usually just grass cutting ,next time you are visiting a deceased loved one just look around you can find a lot of damage sunken graves or other things wrong. Some times people who dig the graves are only responsible for the digging of the grave there being paid for some may come back and fix it when it sinks. But not all will. . The days of cemeteries being taken care of are passed. And if you go around trying to fix them all you will be quickly overwhelmed. Because it's more work than people realize. It is more cemeteries than people realize. Remember back in the days people would take care of there on cemeteries. Faimly or church. But when you have a community cemetery it is a total difference. Time will take its toll, if you want to get people together good luck in doing that. But I would suggest in your area. Would be best.

this is absolutely appalling I'm in the UK and if this happened here and was just left people would riot we respect our dead and all cemeteries here regardless of age are neatly kept grass is mown every week and graves are cleared of debris and weeds etc

I agree. Cremation is the best decision after seeing cemeteries like this. I decided at a young age I will be cremated. My husband was against it until I showed him a few things. That was so sad! I realize there was a hurricane but the cemetery owner should be doing something or whoever runs the cemetery! I mean people are still dying! If I saw that and I was a potential customer I’d say forget about it I don’t want my loved one there! One can almost imagine the old musty smell every time you stuck the camera in a grave. I once saw a video of a mausoleum in this very same condition, very sad! As for that hard lemonade can that seemed to be just tossed into that grave, it's disgusting, and whoever did these things needs to be ashamed of themselves. This is exactly why I requested to get cremated when I die.

Just seeing cinder block aboveground vaults says a lot about the economy in the area, and the people who could afford nothing more costly to inter their family members. There's nothing ornamental on any grave. Nothing.
Cinder block is ugly construction grade basic material. These people were certainly poor folk. They did the best they could according to their means.
Having said that, why for obviously many decades there's been no maintenance, tells me there never was any. This is an unorganized damn near potter's field, might have just been donated land, with no expectations of perpetual care.

@Roger Carroll I understand the high water table in that area, and above ground vaults. I'm just saying the materials they used for the vaults was cheap. It was all the family could afford.
I don't believe any family who buried their loved one there ever expected the cemetery to be landscaped & groomed. It's just a coffin field and they knew it.

I'm a fairly morbid dude.
Ive always beem infatuated with things like death and the occult and macabre.
I'm whats known as a Taphophile.
I've always been obsessed with skulls and cemeteries.
I collect skulls of all types.
However, theres no way i could bring myself to desecrate a grave or tomb in order to take bones or a skull.
Not to mention throw trash in or on one.
Thats pretty disgusting in my opinion 😩

Most of the trash inside of those vaults probably floated there when the water was high from flooding and hurricanes. And the missing bones have probably either been washed away from the floodwaters or carried away by scavenging animals. This has been a problem for a long time in the southern parts of the Gulf Coast. Cremation is a fairly modern thing and wasn't as common back in the day as it is now. Southern Louisiana is home to a large Catholic population, and the Catholic Church didn't allow priests to conduct mass on cremated remains until 1966.

I live about 25 minutes from Lake Charles, La. but I have never been to this cemetery. It's very sad that they don't have ground keepers to keep the cemetery clean and cut. It's also sad the the mayor hasn't done anything about these damaged graves. Surely the Mayor could get the board to get on this and have this problem fixed.
