Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cepillín's song Las Mañanitas are a birthday song celebrating the person's special day. The song starts by acknowledging that it's the recipient's birthday and the age doesn't matter, as long as it's a happy day. The second verse talks about the beauty of the morning and how everyone is happy and excited to celebrate. The third verse talks about the day the person was born, and how all the flowers were born with them. The fourth verse plays with the idea of wanting to be different things to be able to properly greet the person on their birthday with appropriate music. The chorus repeats the idea that morning has come and the recipient should wake up to start their special day by saying "ya viene amaneciendo, ya la luz del dia nos dio, levántate de mañana, mira que ya amaneció."

The song is a traditional Mexican birthday song and is often sung as part of the celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Cepillín, or Ricardo González Gutiérrez, was a popular Mexican clown and entertainer who gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s, mostly known for his work in children's television. He became very popular for his clown persona and regularly performed at children's birthday parties.
