Growing up in poverty, Évora began her singing career in local bars at age sixteen. She saw relative popularity within Cape Verde over the following years, but she retired from singing when it did not provide her with enough money to care for her children. Évora returned to music in 1985, when she contributed to a women's music anthology album in Portugal. There, she met music producer José "Djô" da Silva, who signed Évora to his record label, Lusafrica. She released her debut album, La Diva Aux Pieds Nus, in 1988. Évora saw worldwide success after releasing her fourth and fifth albums: Miss Perfumado (1992) and Cesária (1995). She developed health problems in the late 2000s and died from respiratory failure and hypertension in 2011.

The lyrics of Cesária Évora’s song Mar Azul tell the story of a fisherman who sets out to sea in search of fish to provide for his family. The fisherman is portrayed as a figure who is at one with the sea and the rhythm of the waves. The lyrics describe how the fisherman sets out in the early morning hours with the sea mist still hanging in the air. The fisherman is guided by the stars in the sky and the lighthouse on shore as he navigates the choppy waters.
The lyrics also speak of the sometimes dangerous and unpredictable nature of the sea. The fisherman must be constantly alert for sudden storms and treacherous currents that can capsize his boat and threaten his life. Despite these dangers, the fisherman persists in his task and ultimately returns home with a bountiful catch that will sustain his family.

I have traveled all over the planet and I always listen to this song as I cruise through the ocean.
After many years one thing from my bucket list is fulfilled:
To listen to this song while in Cape Verde. I am in tears as I am listening to this song and I am typing these words.
My visit here will always have a special part in my heart

Oh Mar, Oh Mar
You know, in many languages there are songs cried out to the sea. But nothing like this! This transcends languages! Who can't just picture Cesaria in their mind, her standing on a wooden pier looking out to the sea with sunset on her face when she cries Oh Mar!
