Born on the 27th August 1941 in the port town of Mindelo, Cape Verde, on the island of São Vicente. Long known as the queen of the morna, a soulful genre (related to the Portuguese fado) sung in Creole-Portuguese, she mixed her sentimental folk tunes filled with longing and sadness with the acoustic sounds of guitar, cavaquinho, violin, accordion, and clarinet. Évora's Cape Verdean blues often spoke of the country's history of isolation and slave trade, as well as emigration; almost two-thirds of the million Cape Verdeans alive live abroad.
Évora's voice, a finely-tuned, melancholy instrument with a touch of hoarseness, highlighted her emotional phrasing by accenting a word or phrase. Even audiences who do not understand her language could be held spell-bound by the emotions evident in her performances.
In 2004 she won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
A heavy smoker for decades, Évora was diagnosed with heart problems in 2005. She suffered strokes in 2008 and in September 2011, when she announced she was retiring. She died at the age of seventy in São Vicente, Cape Verde on the 17th December 2011 from respiratory failure and hypertension. A Spanish newspaper reported that forty-eight hours before her death she was still receiving people in her home in Mindelo, popular for always having its doors open.

Traze me um cretcheu
Nessa tardinha
De céu nublado
Um chuva de amor
Pode faze florir
Um coração
Na patamar
Dum vida singela
Vou me encontra
Dona felicidade
Nem um olhar
Me encontra
Num multidão
Tão solitaria
Já tem gente
Gente até demais
Que tá sofre
Na solidão
Já tem gente
Que tá quase tá morre
Na luz cadente
Dum crepúsculo
Já tem gente
Gente até demais
Que tá sofre
Na solidão
Já tem gente
Que tá quase tá morre
Na luz cadente
Dum crepúsculo
Vento de mar
Traze me um cretcheu
Nessa tardinha
De céu nublado
Um chuva de amor
Pode faze florir
Um coração
Que modi paixão
Na patamar
Dum vida singela
Vou me encontra
Dona felicidade
Nem um olhar
Me encontra
Num multidão
Tão solitaria
Já tem gente
Gente até demais
Que tá sofre
Na solidão
Já tem gente
Que tá quase tá morre
Na luz cadente
Dum crepúsculo
Já tem gente
Gente até demais
Que tá sofre
Na solidão
Já tem gente
Que tá quase tá morre
Na luz cadente
Dum crepúsculo

In Cesária Évora's song Crepuscular Solidao, the singer longs for a sea breeze to bring her a love that will bloom her heart. The first stanza sets the scene with the singer waiting on a cloudy evening for a love to arrive. The second stanza expresses the hope that a rain shower of love can make a heart bloom with passion. In the third stanza, the singer describes her desire to find happiness on the simple level of life.
The repeated refrain of "Já tem gente" draws attention to the many people who are suffering in loneliness and even death during the "crepúsculo" or twilight. The singer feels a sense of solitude even in a crowd, and the song suggests that many others feel similarly. The use of "tá" instead of "está" in the lyrics reflects the Cape Verdean Creole language that Cesária Évora spoke.
The soothing melody paired with the poetic language captures the wistful longing for love and happiness in the face of the harsh reality of isolation and despair. Cesária Évora's voice, known as the "Barefoot Diva," conveys the emotional depth of the lyrics and resonates with listeners.

Soledad crepuscular
Viento del mar
Tráeme un amor2
En este atardecer
De cielo nublado
Una lluvia de amor
Puede hacer florecer
Un corazón
desolado de pasión
En el umbral
De una vida sencilla
Encontré
A la señora felicidad
Ninguna mirada
Me encontré
En una multitud
Tan solitaria
Hay gente
Demasiada gente
Que sufre
En soledad
Hay gente
Que llega casi a morir
En la luz mortecina
De un crepúsculo
