The Ark
Chad And Jeremy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Look, the ark, it is bearing down
And you are staring down
The wind and the sea
And hoping perhaps
With the waters going back
That a new day will have dawned
High on Mount Ararat
Starting again
And the cargo that it brought
Is leaping from the hold
Looking for the chaos that it sought
The ark, the ark, it is giving forth
You might say it is giving birth
To the children of man
But who is this?
Staring at the sunshine?
Drying socks, laughing, shoving, crying?
Not you, not me my friend
Are not these the men of the iron mountain?
Were not these the leaders of the fighting?
Ah now, you see my friend . . . . .
Polish up your helmets, lads, we're going on parade
We praise our God for sparing us to fight another day
We'll sing his song in unison, we'll sing in harmony
We'll stamp out insurrection, wherever it may be
So bring on the rain
And the lightning from the sky
And let us hope again
Oh look, the ark, it drifting now
The song "The Ark" by Chad and Jeremy is a poetic representation of humanity's struggles and rebirth through the story of Noah's Ark from the Bible. The lyrics describe the ark on its journey through the tumultuous waters, hoping for a new day to dawn once the waters have receded. The ark ultimately finds rest on Mount Ararat, and the cargo it holds, representing humanity, is released to find the chaos it sought. The song then shifts to a description of the "men of the iron mountain" and their leaders, praising God for sparing them to fight another day against insurrection.
The ark in the song symbolizes a cycle of destruction and rebirth, representing humanity's enduring resilience. The idea of chaos seeking to destroy humanity is also present, with the cargo of the ark representing humanity's darker impulses that must be confronted. The Iron Mountain imagery represents the cycle of conflict and struggle that continues to plague humanity, despite the promise of a new day with the release of the ark's cargo.
Overall, "The Ark" is a hopeful yet realistic reflection on humanity's journey through history, emphasizing the importance of confronting chaos and finding hope even in the face of conflict and struggle.

HARKENS TO "OF CABBAGES AND KINGS"

What a great album this is. It's right up there with "Of Cabbages and Kings". I'm very surprised this didn't make more of a splash when it came out.

If I'd heard these two albums ('The Ark' and 'Of Cabbages and Kings') back when they were released they would have blown my tiny mind.

THIS might be the best album of the 60s I've heard in the last few months. This and Zappa "we're only in it for the money" (1968). This is really, really just beautiful. Why is it so hard to write pure simple songs like this? I think psychedelics have something to do with a lot of '60s creativity, not all.
