Black & Blue
Chain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't have nothing to give
But if I could I'd give my heart's beat
But my mind and heart breaks

Yeah, it's just a bitch
Yeah, it's just a bitch
Yeah, it's just a bitch
You know we're living in shit
Guess the love is where you found it
But my mind and heart breaks

Yeah, it's just a bitch
Yeah, it's just a bitch
Yeah, it's just a bitch

We could leave this world behind
And die, and die in the morning
We could leave this world behind
This world behind

We could leave this world forever
We could leave this world behind
Still my mind and heart breaks

(Ba, ba, ba) yeah, it's just a bitch
(Ba, ba, ba) yeah, it's just a bitch
(Ba, ba, ba) yeah, it's just a bitch
(Ba, ba, ba) yeah, it's just a bitch
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah

(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah
(Ba, ba, ba) ah ah ah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Chain's song Black & Blue speak of heartbreak and the overwhelming feeling of being unable to give what you wish you could. The songwriter explains that if they had anything to give, it would be the very beat of their heart. However, despite their willingness to give all they have, their mind and heart still break. The song speaks to the idea that life is challenging and love can be found in unexpected places.

Even in the worst of circumstances, one can still find love, but it can feel like a never-ending cycle of disappointment and heartache. The songwriter expresses frustration and a sense of powerlessness in the face of this difficult reality. The chorus repeats the phrase "yeah, it's just a bitch" several times to emphasize the difficulty of their situation. The song ends with a repeated plea to leave this world behind, which can be seen as a final attempt to escape the pain and frustration that comes with living.

What great song that stands the test of time - Matt's vocals are so raw and gut-wrenching! I love Chain.

Loved Chain, saw them play many times over the years. Black & Blue was always awsome live! Matt Taylor on Harmonica, and Phil Manning an amazing guitarist. Sometimes Wendy Saddington joined them on vocals too. Great band and fond memories of them on Tuesday nights at the Sunnie's in Punchbowl!

Great Australian blues band

@NewFalconerRecords

I just had to hear this song right now and I never knew this clip existed. Great convict blues. Matt Taylor always said that he had to make an Australian take on the blues and Chain did it here with aplomb.
