Planet Health
Chairlift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I arrived on planet health
In the state of being well
So I altered my self conscious messes
And body images

I visited the food pyramid
In the desert of vitamins
I found a desired heart rate
And a mouth to resuscitate

I am feeling great tonight
I am feeling great tonight
I am feeling great tonight
I am feeling great tonight

I was trained in diversity
In the garden of puberty
Where they Heimlich maneuvered me
And they showed me how to make a baby

I found my friends in the forest of loves
Where we just said no to drugs
Our intercourse was well protected
We made love with each others' eyes

We're feeling great tonight
We're feeling great tonight
We're feeling great tonight
We're feeling great tonight

Then I found out where you're sent
When you're sick and sad and old
They kick you off of planet health
Into a universe of cold

Stop drop and roll
Just stop drop and roll
Stop drop and roll
Gotta stop and put out the fire

Stop drop and roll
Just stop drop and roll
Stop drop and roll
Gotta stop and put out the fire

Feeling great tonight
I am feeling great tonight

I am feeling great tonight
I am feeling great tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Planet Health" by Chairlift speaks about arriving on a planet called "Planet Health" where one is in a state of being well. The lyrics explain that upon arrival, the individual decides to alter their self-conscious messes and body images. The individual then visits the food pyramid and finds a desired heart rate, as well as a mouth to resuscitate. The theme of feeling great is reiterated throughout the song, with the chorus stating "I am feeling great tonight" and "We're feeling great tonight."

The lyrics are a commentary on the obsession with health and fitness in contemporary culture. Chairlift's "Planet Health" critiques the pressure to be in a constant state of being well, even when it means that people are obsessing over their appearance and diet. Furthermore, the song highlights that good health is often associated with youth, suggesting that society disregards and discards the elderly when they fall ill or struggle with their health. Moreover, the lyrics are a commentary on the overemphasis on sex education in the United States.

I first heard this song when I was 15. Listening to it at 27, I feel like I'm sick, sad and old and it hits different.

This is one of the best Chairlift songs imo, shame it's so underrated.

I saw these guys live last night. It was the most refreshing thing I have seen in 10 years. Great musicianship... the vocalist is like woah. They are straight out of the 2080's.

I saw this band at lollapalooza, never had heard of this band but went to see them. When they played this song, it was crazy, one of the best songs of the whole festival, great live band.

I really like this song, it has this melodic, dreamy quality to it, even as its underlying message is disturbing.
