In 1964, at the age of 11, Khan formed her first musical group, the Crystalettes. While still in high school, she joined the Afro-Arts Theater, a group which toured with Motown great Mary Wells; a few years later, she adopted the African name Chaka Khan while working on the Black Panthers' breakfast program. After quitting high school in 1969, Khan joined the group Lyfe, soon exiting to join another dance band, the Babysitters — neither was on the fast track to success, but her fortunes changed when she teamed with ex-American Breed member Kevin Murphy and Andre Fisher to form Rufus.
Debuting in 1973 with a self-titled effort on the ABC label, Rufus was among the preeminent funk groups of the decade. Distinguished by Khan's dynamic vocals, the group earned half a dozen gold or platinum albums.
While still a member of the group in 1978, Khan embarked on a successful solo career. Her signature hits, both with Rufus and solo, include "Tell Me Something Good", "Sweet Thing", "Ain't Nobody", "I'm Every Woman", "I Feel for You" and "Through the Fire".
Eternity
Chaka Khan Lyrics

A multitude of colorless hours pass
I crave the life inside you, it keeps me from harm
I only pray that it's not just another God
Eternity, I want to be with you for all eternity
Darling you be, the only one for me together for eternity
To feel the warmth in a world so cold
Whenever we (ooh) -- I don't know
But I want you all the time (I want to hold on)
you are the beginning middle and end to every story told
you are the science of my mind
Eternity, I want to be with you for all eternity
Darling you be, the only one for me together for eternity
And it seems like a year away
That you and I were making love
One should take life from day to day
But all my dreams are made of
All my dreams are made of eternity
The lyrics of Chaka Khan's song "Eternity" express the deep longing for a loved one that has been absent for an extended period of time. The opening lines convey the singer's eagerness to be held by her lover after what seems like an eternity of separation. The use of the word "multitude" in the second line emphasizes the extent of time that has passed. The third line reveals that the singer's longing for her lover is not just based on the physical pleasure but also on the emotional safety that the relationship provides. The fourth line, however, reveals the singer's apprehensions if the lover will return or not.
In the chorus of the song, the singer proclaims that she wants to spend eternity with her lover. She sees the lover as the perfect match for her and the only one that can provide her with the love and companionship that she craves. The repeated use of "eternity" in the chorus underscores how important the relationship is to the singer and highlights her desire for it to last forever.
The second verse expresses the singer's desires to touch her lover, and the comfort that the physical connection brings to her. The lines "you are the beginning middle and end to every story told/you are the science of my mind" reveal how important the lover is to the singer and how integral the relationship is to her identity. The final lines of the song, "But all my dreams are made of/All my dreams are made of eternity" indicate that the singer's greatest desire is to be with her lover and that everything else fades in comparison.
