Champion Jack Dupree Lyrics

One scotch, one bourbon, one beer
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer, yeah
Please Mr. Bartender, listen here
I ain’t here for trouble so have no fear
One scotch, one bourbon and one beer

I don’t want soda up, bubble gum
You got what it takes now give me some
Since my baby’s been gone, everyday is lost
I’m on this kick and I can't get on

One scotch, one bourbon, one beer
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer
Hey Mr. Bartender, listen here
I ain’t here for trouble and have no fear
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer

My baby started me on this spree
I can’t find her and she can’t find me
She left this morning, sayin' she wouldn’t stay
She’s been out all night and it’s the break of day

One scotch, one bourbon, one beer
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer, yeah
Hey Mr. Bartender, listen here
I ain’t here for trouble and have no fear
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer

One more nipping make it strong
I got to find my baby, if it’s all night long

One scotch, one bourbon, one beer
One scotch, one bourbon, one beer, yeah
Hey Mr. Bartender, listen here
I ain’t here for trouble and have no fear
One scotch, one bourbon and one beer

Did you hear me, fellas, I said?
Pour a quarter, one scotch
Now I’m gonna put a bourbon on the side

Give me bourbon who serves two
One scotch

Overall Meaning

Champion Jack Dupree's song "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer" is a classic blues track that tells the story of a man who is searching for his lost love while drowning his sorrows in alcohol at a bar. The song begins with the singer requesting one scotch, one bourbon, and one beer from the bartender. He clarifies that he's not there to cause any trouble; he just wants to drink his sorrows away. He comments that since his baby left, every day feels lost, and he can't seem to get over her.

The second verse gives listeners a clearer idea of why the singer is seeking solace in alcohol. His partner started him on this drinking "spree," and he can't find her anymore. He woke up alone and found that she had been out all night, and it's already the break of day. The lyrics become increasingly desperate as the song progresses, and the singer begs the bartender for one more drink, insisting that it be strong. He needs to find his baby, even if it takes him all night.

on She Cooks Me Cabbage

The only line that confuses me is "and she called them turnip greens." Anyone got an idea what Champion Jack is trying to convey here? Why would she cook him cabbage and call it turnip greens?
