Rainbow
Chandler Gene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a rainbow in my heart
That reminds me of how we parted
And I, I know my love is gone forever
But deep down in my heart I'll love her forever

There's a rainbow, ohh in my heart
Baby, baby, baby, come on my baby
Now listen to me

I'm down on my knees, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Please listen to my plea, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm looking up above oh, yeah, up above
Praying for your love

Baby, baby, baby, come on now my baby
Come on stop this rainbow
Come on now baby, and stop this rainbow

And I know the things I done to you was wrong
I'm asking you to give me one more chance
Just one more chance to prove to you
That I know I was wrong

And I realize now baby, and I realize now baby
That love only comes once and when it comes you better grab it
'Cause it may not come no more

And I'm askin' you baby, and I'm askin' you baby
And I'm askin' you baby, and I'm askin' you baby
I'm askin please, please, please, please, please
Baby, baby, baby

You look so good this evening baby
Sometimes when I look out at you baby
I feel like I just want to, I just want to
I just want to reach out to you

I just want to reach out to you
I just want to reach out to you
I just want to reach out to you
I just want to reach out to you
I want to reach out and bite, yeah
And I just want to ask you one thing baby
And I just want to ask you one thing baby

I just want to ask you one thing
I just want to ask you one thing

I just want to ask you one thing, one thing baby
I want you to stop, stop this rainbow in my heart

Overall Meaning

In Chandler Gene's song "Rainbow," the lyrics describe the singer's heartache and longing for a lost love. The metaphor of a rainbow in the heart serves as a reminder of the pain of their parting. The singer expresses a deep and abiding love for the lost love, despite the fact that they know the love is gone forever. The singer begs for one more chance to prove their love and to make things right after recognizing the wrongs they have committed. The chorus repeatedly asks the lost love to "stop this rainbow" in the singer's heart, representing the suffering and agony that the singer experiences in the aftermath of their breakup.

The song's repeated pleas for a second chance amplify the emotional power of the lyrics. The singer acknowledges their mistakes but persists in their desire to be with the lost love. The song ultimately conveys a sense of desperation, as the singer longs to end the pain of their separation and have the opportunity to fix the relationship. The song's passionate lyrics and bold imagery are a tribute to the universal experience of heartbreak and the profound impact it can have on those who suffer from it.

One of the best live recordings ever made. Gene took his rag-tag soul band into the Regal theater and the audience (especially the women) proceeded to rip the place into itty bitty pieces. When he gets through with the song proper and goes into his ad lib, he gives a clinic on how to work a crowd; with each word sung he ever so slowly drives the women completely crazy (and you are there for every scream). He's had bigger hits, but this one cements his reputation as the dean of Chicago soul singers.

I remember my mom playing that song. Those songs bring such good memories back. My mom and her friends sitting around talking and having a good time. Things weren't so dangerous then and more fun. Gene Chandler was something else too then. The men of those days were something else, not like these men now. Everybody can think back to their childhood. Not a care in the world. The good old days. Music was so much different. I love that old music!!!!!!
