Bio: Chant is a trio born in 1999 from an idea of drummer Cristiano Calcanile.
Until 2007, Chant performed as an acoustic trio, releasing an album in 2003 for the Italian label "Caligola" that was enthusiastically received by critics for the strong interplay of the players and the original blend of compositional elements and free improvisation.
In 2007, during the recording of their second album, the trio felt a strong need to rethink their musical working method, and thus the decision of enrich their instrumental and compositional palette. That necessity brought the inclusion of electric and electronic (electric bass and synthesizers) and acoustic instruments (harpsichord, pipe organ, clavichord and harmonium) as well as the use of the recording studio "as an instrument" (a feature that is usually atypical in the improvised music field). This process consisted in one year dedicated to the pre-production of the new material, and a new, longer recording session during Summer 2008 in Finland.
This music is the result of our personal research between composition and improvisation, but with a strong intention of leaving the interplay and the simple joy of playing together intact.

Shooting Gallery
Chant Lyrics

Just relax...
Tie it off...
I will help you
Help you put it in
Oh yes you can stay
All are welcome
In the shooting...
[Chorus 1]
Won't you come over
I'll let you love me
We may never have this chance again
Yes come on over
I let you love me
We may never, ever pass this way again
In the shooting gallery
[Verse 2]
The sound...
And the colour...
Are sweeping you...
Sweeping you away
Are you sleeping my friend?
No I fear you are dead
In the shooting...
[Chorus 2]
The shooting gallery
But, come on over
And I'll let you love me
We may never have this chance again
Yes come on over
And I'll let you love me
We may never, ever pass this way again
In the shooting gallery
The song "Shooting Gallery" by Chant is a dark and haunting track that talks about addiction and the darker side of life. The lyrics describe a scene in a drug den where the singer invites someone to "tie it off" and "put it in" while trying to reassure them that they are welcome in the "shooting gallery." The chorus seems to indicate that the singer is trying to live for the moment and take advantage of the situation, inviting the other person to "love" them and warning that they may never have another chance. The second verse continues the drug imagery while also evoking a sense of disconnection and detachment, suggesting that the person the singer is talking to may have overdosed or passed out.
Overall, "Shooting Gallery" is a powerful and somber song that captures the desperation and pain of addiction. The lyrics invite the listener into a world of temporary pleasure and escape, only to reveal the emptiness and danger that lies beneath. Through its dark imagery and bleak outlook, the song serves as a warning against the destructive forces of addiction and the need to seek help and support in order to overcome it.
