Bio: Chant is a trio born in 1999 from an idea of drummer Cristiano Calcanile.
Until 2007, Chant performed as an acoustic trio, releasing an album in 2003 for the Italian label "Caligola" that was enthusiastically received by critics for the strong interplay of the players and the original blend of compositional elements and free improvisation.
In 2007, during the recording of their second album, the trio felt a strong need to rethink their musical working method, and thus the decision of enrich their instrumental and compositional palette. That necessity brought the inclusion of electric and electronic (electric bass and synthesizers) and acoustic instruments (harpsichord, pipe organ, clavichord and harmonium) as well as the use of the recording studio "as an instrument" (a feature that is usually atypical in the improvised music field). This process consisted in one year dedicated to the pre-production of the new material, and a new, longer recording session during Summer 2008 in Finland.
This music is the result of our personal research between composition and improvisation, but with a strong intention of leaving the interplay and the simple joy of playing together intact.

Smrt' Smrtiace Sily
Chant Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Try avoid all these needles and pins
It's alright everything works out in the end
We'll be safe if we make it over this hill, huh?
Somehow I know we will pull through
Don't ask, somehow I know
So lets blow away from here
Try to annoy your favorite clown
See the lies gather there
Nothing is right, it's always wrong
This so called life we sip through a straw
So you ask, "How is he doing?"
You ought to know
You put his ass there
Suck out his mind
Suck out marrow
And have a lick
Of these peanut butter basted bones
The lyrics of Chant's song Smrt' Smrtiace Sily seem to be about navigating through difficult times and avoiding destructive forces. The first verse is a call to avoid things that may bring harm or cause instability, such as a crashing sky or needles and pins. However, it reassures that everything will eventually work out in the end and safety can be found by making it over the figurative hill. The second verse talks about the struggles and injustices of life, yet the persona seems confident that they will pull through regardless. They urge listeners to annoy their favorite clown, possibly meaning to find an alternative in times when things seem hopeless. They also call out the lies that surround them and express discontent with the struggle of life. The last few lines are particularly jarring, seemingly depicting the consumption and abuse of a person and their bodily remains. The line "you put his ass there" suggests culpability, but it is unclear who is addressed in this verse.
Overall, this song seems to be about finding hope and avoiding harm during times of hardship. It may also contain themes of anger towards those who have caused harm, and a call to find alternative ways to cope. However, the imagery and message behind some of the lyrics are ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways, leading to a haunting and thought-provoking effect.
