Chantal Kreviazuk Lyrics

From all of these colors
Dressed up like kings and queens
But it don't mean a thing
A killer, I'm not
Murderers get caught
If I'm such a criminal
Well I get so tired
Of the word on the wire
It's all so black and white
But how quickly it fades
We eat food for thought
And forget what we've got
She was a prisoner
Now I nearly am
Over the ocean
A world away
Ghosts from her home asylum
Can't chase her away
Ohhhh
Over the ocean
A world away
Ghosts from her home asylum
Can't chase her away
Over the ocean
A world away
Ghosts from her home asylum
Can't chase her away
Ohhhh
In the song "Asylum," Chantal Kreviazuk expresses her frustration with society's superficiality and the judgment that comes with it. She mentions that people get blinded by material things such as wealth and status, and emphasized how being dressed up like a king or queen doesn't guarantee any real value. The song touches upon criminality and how people are quick to label others as criminals, even if it is not the case. Chantal uses the line "If I'm such a criminal, then take me away" to show her willingness to escape from a society that judges people based on appearances. She also emphasizes how people tend to jump to conclusions and make black and white assumptions about people, which she finds very frustrating.
The next verse talks about how people are sometimes not grateful for what they have and don't acknowledge it. Chantal emphasizes how we sometimes focus too much on what other people have and forget what we already possess. She mentions how someone she knew was a prisoner, but now the tables have turned and how she is almost in the same position. The chorus repeats the line "Over the ocean, a world away, ghosts from her home asylum can't chase her away" indicating that the person she's talking about has left her past behind and moved on with her life. However, what haunts her, even from a distance, aren't physical or tangible things but something within her mind.
Overall, "Asylum" is a song about being trapped in a judgmental society, and how it's essential to break free from the grip of materialism, superficiality, and assumptions. It's about acknowledging the things we have and not taking them for granted, and being conscious of how we perceive those around us.

I get so blind
I become oblivious to everything
From all of these colors
Because of the distractions and illusions around me
Dressed up like kings and queens
Appearing grand and superior
But it don't mean a thing
Despite appearances, it has no significant value.
A killer, I'm not
I'm not a murderer
Murderers get caught
Killers are always caught by the law
If I'm such a criminal
If being an independent thinker is a crime
Then take me away
I'm ready to face the consequences of my actions
Well I get so tired
I get exhausted
Of the word on the wire
Of rumors and gossip
It's all so black and white
People see things as either good or bad
But how quickly it fades
However, this perspective does not last
We eat food for thought
We consume ideas and beliefs
And forget what we've got
And forget the real value of things

So beautiful music. Chantal is one of my favorite singers. Probably the singer I heard the most over and over again. I love all your albums and it's hard to choose the best one.
