these days
Chantal Kreviazuk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's this life anyway?
What's it to you and me?
What's it to anyone?
Who are we supposed to be?
Make me a storybook
Write me away from here
I need a different now
Where we can wear each other for awhile
I'll lend you my tears if I could borrow a smile
I'll get through tomorrow somehow today
Happy After

Once upon these days

There's four roads to anywhere
Four ways to everything
We were unbreakable
We spoke our destiny
Let's take a moment out
Go were we never go
Let's make a new world now

Where we can wear each other for awhile
I'll lend you my tears if I could borrow your smile
We'll get through tomorrow somehow today
Happy After

Once upon these days

Then one day we'll find
when we're looking back at this time
Wondering how we've come so far from this
When we close our eyes

What's this life anyway
What's it to you and me
What are we doing here
Who are we supposed to be
I'll take a better world
I'll take anything
I'll take our little world now

Where we can wear each other for awhile
I'll lend you my tears if I could borrow your smile
We'll get through tomorrow somehow today
Happy After

Once upon these days

Overall Meaning

Chantal Kreviazuk’s song “These Days” is a reflection on life and the desire for a better world. The lyrics start with a series of rhetorical questions asking about the meaning of life and our place in it. The chorus then shifts towards the wish for a new world, a space where we can find comfort in each other during difficult times. Kreviazuk asks to be taken away from the present moment, examining the idea that we can make a different world than the one we currently inhabit. The verses continue to discuss the idea that we have multiple paths before us and that we were once unbreakable, but now we need to make a change to find a better world for ourselves.

Been listening to this song since I was a kid who was bullied for being gay/weird/intelligent and felt so incredibly alone except for the handful of friends I made here and there, most of whom stayed in the town we grew up in, or got into hard drugs, or just grew apart from me. Now I'm listening to it as a third-year medical student with a loving girlfriend and supportive friends who care about me, so much closer to my lifelong goal of becoming a psychiatrist. So many people have come and gone, and I remember all of them with all my heart. Sometimes I wish we could stay in those sweet moments forever, but the world keeps marching us forward no matter what.

This song reminds me of a group of friends who knew each other since childhood, grew up in the same town and grew apart later on due to their hectic adulthoods, scattered all across the world despite everything that happened. One day, they got back together to look back on their memories and decide to renew their bond despite college, careers, weddings, difference of locations, children and for my case, untimely deaths happening (yes, some former childhood friends/acquaintances died before we reached 30, eight overall, my most recent one died in April 2021 during childbirth).
How bittersweet.
